Raj Babbar's daughter learned about his relationship with Smita Patil at a young age: 'I felt I shouldn't tell my mother'

Actor Raj Babbar was already in a marriage and had two children when he initiated a relationship with fellow actress Smita Patil. The affair and subsequent marriage were surrounded by considerable controversy due to the circumstances of their beginning. Raj Babbar's daughter, former actress Juhi Babbar, has recently shared her experiences regarding that period and how she discovered the relationship at the tender age of seven.

In a conversation with Lehren Retro, Juhi reflected on Smita Patil's deliberate attempts to bond with Raj's two children, Juhi and her brother, Arya. "When I was just seven years old, my father explained his marriage to Smita Patil, which shaped my distinct memories of her. She made significant efforts for me, believing that since we were the children of someone dear to her, we were special to her as well. She expressed her affection through thoughtful gestures, often bringing us gifts from her travels, and she ensured that our favourite meals were prepared at home. While these cherished memories are few, they remain meaningful," she shared.

Juhi expressed her internal conflict regarding her perception of Smita during that period. Although the actress was consistently kind to them, Juhi recognized the impact of the marriage on her family, particularly on her mother, Nadira. "As a child, I understood that this was the woman my father wished to marry. I noticed Smita's efforts towards my brother and me, yet I was also aware that this situation was unsettling the family dynamic and causing distress to my mother. I grasped that while Aunty (Smita) was treating me well, it was best not to discuss this with my mother when I returned home."

Smita Patil and Raj Babbar first encountered each other on the set of their 1982 film, Bheegi Palkein. The following year, Raj left his relationship with Nadira to marry Smita. Their son, actor Prateik Babbar, was born in November 1986. Tragically, Smita Patil passed away shortly after due to complications from childbirth at the age of 31. A few years later, Raj Babbar reconciled with Nadira.

Juhi Babbar made her cinematic debut in 2003 with the film Kash Aap Hamare Hote, where she starred alongside Sonu Nigam. Over the subsequent years, she appeared in a limited number of films before taking a break to focus on television. In 2023, she made her return to cinema with supporting roles in films such as Faraaz and Farrey. She is married to actor Anup Soni.
