Actor Arya Babbar once harbored resentment towards his father, Raj Babbar, for leaving his mother, Nadira, in favor of actress Smita Patil. However, he has since come to appreciate the complexity of their relationship and now holds it in high regard.

Arya looks back

In a video posted on his channel Babbar Saab, Arya discussed his father Raj's relationship with Smita. He recounted how reporters frequently questioned him about his father's involvement with Smita Patil, despite Raj being married to Nadira at the time he fell in love with Smita.

"When I was around 6 or 7 years old, I found joy in playing hide and seek, but it was not with my peers; it was with the media. They would appear unexpectedly, thrust a microphone in front of me, and inquire, 'How do you feel about your father's affair?'"

He continued, "In truth, it was not an affair. It was a genuine and profound love that my father and Smita shared. As a family, we recognized and respected that bond and accepted it. However, at the age of 6 or 7, such complexities were beyond my understanding. This lack of comprehension strained my relationship with my father, as I could not grasp the situation. Now, at 43 and having been married for 8 to 9 years, I realize that 'My father wasn’t entirely wrong.'"

Arya also noted that a positive aspect of that relationship was the arrival of his "little brother (Prateik)."

More about the Babbar family

Raj was married to Nadira from 1975 until 1983. In 1982, while working on the film Bheegi Palkein, he met Smita Patil and subsequently left Nadira to marry her. Their son, Prateik, was born in 1986. Tragically, Smita passed away shortly after childbirth due to complications at the age of 31. A few years later, Raj and Nadira reconciled, and they had a son and a daughter together. Recently, Prateik Babbar married Priya Banerjee, although no members of the Babbar family were invited to the wedding. This marks Prateik's second marriage, as he was previously wed to Sanya Sagar, with whom he separated in 2023 after one year of marriage.
