Actor Rahul Bose has reflected on receiving only a small portion of the salary that his Chameli co-star Kareena Kapoor earned for their roles in the 2003 film. During his remarks at the Mardon Wali Baat, a national conference focused on men, masculinities, and gender-based violence, Rahul noted, as reported by the news agency PTI, that Kareena was the more prominent star and had the ability to attract audiences to theaters.

Rahul Bose on how much he earned for Chameli

Rahul amusingly referred to himself as a starlet, noting that he is "not the one who attracts audiences to the theater." He remarked, "Men can also be starlets, and I exemplify that... I played the starlet in Chameli, while Kareena was the true star; she continues to draw more viewers to the theater than I ever could. It's just a fact. My compensation was only a small portion of what Kareena received. It makes perfect sense... I am not the person who brings people into the theater," Rahul stated.

Rahul talks about pay disparity

Rahul stated, "I have created two films and I believe my compensation is fair; I wouldn't expect to earn more than what I currently receive. Therefore, I do not subscribe to the notion of gender pay disparity; the film industry is quite equitable in this regard. Compensation is straightforward: if you earn money, you are paid accordingly, and if you do not, your pay is lower." He further asserted that the representation of women in the film industry surpasses that of any other sector.

Rahul on violence against women in films

Discussing the portrayal of masculinity and violence against women in Indian cinema, the actor acknowledged that cinema, being highly visible, often becomes the favourite "whipping boy". He said it simply reflects the realities of society, for better or worse, and likened cinema to a "faithful younger sibling" of society.

On the depiction of violence against women, he noted that since the 1950s, the portrayal has been inconsistent, neither improving nor declining significantly.
