Actresses Chaiti Ghoshal, Debleena Dutt, Bidipta Chakraborty, and Tanika Basu have been vocal in support of the junior doctors on a hunger strike in the wake of the RG Kar incident. Actors Soumya Banerjee, Prantik Banerjee, and director Birsa Dasgupta joined them in the Reclaim the Night program on August 14. Now, the artistes will have a symbolic hunger strike on Saturday. They will join the doctor’s camp at Esplanade and start their hunger strike at 11 am. They will only drink water, and medicine if needed, throughout the day. They will break the fasting at 11 AM on Sunday.

In an interview with Sangbad Pratidin Digital, Chaiti Ghoshal said, “This is not a protest of only the doctors but all of us. We all want a safe workplace. Do we want fake medicines to be sold? Do we want middlemen to do work? This is our protest. The corruption's loss is suffered by all. Incidents like Krishnanagar still happen after we come to the streets to protest. It happened with a nine-year-old child in Kultali. Hence this is a protest not only of the junior doctors. But only they are fasting. I want to tell the honorable CM to come and talk, I want to see the government's human face, even if it is late. If something happens to the doctors, will it be good for Bengal's image in India?"

The junior doctors are on strike with ten demands. Arnab Mukherjee from SSKM, Sayantani Ghosh Hazra from KPC Medical, Snigdha Hazra and Alolika Ghorui from Kolkata Medical, Parichay Panda from Shishumangal, Rumelika Kumar from All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Spandan Choudhury from Midnapore Medical, and Sandip Mondal from North Bengal Medical College and Hospital are on a hunger strike.

Tanaya Panja and Anustup Mukherjee from Kolkata Medical, Pulastya Acharya from NRS, and Souvik Banerjee and Alok Verma from North Bengal have been hospitalized because they fell sick while on the hunger strike. Aniket Mahato from RG Kar Medical College was recently released from the hospital. The physical condition of those who are continuing the strike is deteriorating.
