Rachel Zegler criticized "White" executives for requesting evidence of her Latina heritage during a Tuesday interview. The Snow White actress stated that she was consistently asked to validate her cultural identity in order to secure the role of Maria in West Side Story.

"There is some confusion surrounding my name, as it contains no Latin elements," the 23-year-old shared with Allure. She recounted that during her audition for a role in Steven Spielberg's 2021 film, the producers questioned her Colombian background.
"When I was being considered for the role of Maria in West Side Story, they repeatedly called to verify my authenticity," Zegler remembered, adding, "I thought to myself, 'Would you like me to bring my grandmother? I can bring her to the studio if you wish to meet her.'"
The Y2K star expressed her astonishment at having to prove her identity to a group of predominantly white executives. "Navigating this experience as part of the diaspora in today's society is quite intriguing. However, I take great pride in my Colombian heritage," she remarked.
Zegler also admitted that her singing talent played a crucial role in securing her part in Snow White, her latest project alongside Gal Gadot. "The truth is, I was given this opportunity because of my singing ability," she stated.
"My hope for the future of diversity and inclusion is that we support and cultivate talent regardless of their appearance," the Spellbound star emphasized, adding that "it is vital for the next generation" to witness films like the Disney production that depict the triumph of good over evil.
