Raashii Khanna Calls Out Bollywood: ‘Why Copy When Dubs Are Online?’
16 days ago | 5 Views
Actor Raashii Khanna acknowledges the ongoing discussion regarding Bollywood's tendency to draw inspiration from South Indian films in pursuit of box office success. Nevertheless, she advocates for a reassessment of this approach.
She points out that audiences are seeking innovative content, and with the availability of dubbed films online, it is crucial for the industry to provide fresh offerings.
On Bollywood's Imitation of South Indian Cinema
In the current landscape of pan-India cinema, there is an increasing perception that Bollywood is trying to emulate successful South Indian films to achieve commercial success. Raashii recognizes that this phenomenon is indeed occurring.
"I cannot deny that we frequently encounter remakes from the South, but I believe the industry is becoming increasingly aware that audiences desire new content, especially since dubbed films are easily accessible online," Raashii explains.
She adds, "Moreover, with the rise of OTT platforms, language is no longer a significant barrier. I observe a shift in mindset, and I sincerely hope we can produce original content and explore diverse genres, as the truth is, no one can predict what will resonate with audiences anymore."
On balancing her career in Hindi and South Cinema
Since her debut in 2013 with Madras Cafe, Raashii has established herself in the Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil film industries. Her portfolio includes notable projects such as Oohalu Gusagusalade, Bengal Tiger, Supreme, Jai Lava Kusa, Tholi Prema, Imaikkaa Nodigal, Venky Mama, Sardar, and Aranmanai 4.
Reflecting on her experiences in both industries, Raashii states, “Everyone shares a common enthusiasm for creating quality films and being part of that process.”
She further explains, “Aside from the language, which is no longer a significant barrier, each industry is deeply rooted in its own culture. You can observe the essence of their traditional values subtly woven into their films. It’s remarkable how united we are in our diversity, as the emotions resonate similarly across all languages. That is the thread that connects us.” Raashii was recently featured in the Tamil historical horror film Aghathiyaa.
For the actor, working on Aghathiyaa proved to be an enlightening experience. “The genre initially drew me to Aghathiyaa, followed by the story, which perfectly blends elements of thriller, horror, and fantasy. My key takeaway is that shooting horror films is quite challenging. It requires significant effort to bring everything together. As an actor, you find yourself reacting to elements that aren’t physically present, which also stretches your imagination. Thus, it was a valuable learning experience. Additionally, Aghathiyaa employs innovative technology to enhance the audience's theatrical experience,” she shares.
On her acting Journey
In the course of the discussion, the actor acknowledges the challenges of portraying characters in various languages.
"It does impact my well-being, both mentally and physically; however, my passion for acting prevails. I do not perceive it merely as a challenge but rather as a chance for continuous growth and learning. I consider myself a lifelong student of cinema, and I am immensely grateful for the remarkable journey I have experienced. The goal is to keep evolving and acquiring knowledge," she states.
There was a period when she aspired to become an IAS Officer and regarded acting as an unstable profession. Do you still hold that view?
"Acting is indeed a demanding career, particularly for those entering the field without industry support. Yet, I have come to understand that each project presents a chance to demonstrate my abilities and develop as an artist. While box office performance is significant, I have also recognized that the ultimate outcome of a film is not solely within my control — what I can influence is the effort, commitment, and enthusiasm I invest in every project. This realization has instilled in me a sense of confidence and clarity, allowing me to overcome any lingering insecurities," explains Raashii, who is currently involved in the second season of Farzi alongside Shahid Kapoor.
