Academy Awards introduce the stunt design category for the 100th Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the creation of a new Oscar category dedicated to stunt design, which will be awarded for the first time at the 100th Academy Awards. This accolade will recognize films released in 2027 during the ceremony in 2028.

As reported by Variety, the initiative to establish this official Oscar category was spearheaded by director and producer David Leitch, renowned for his work on films such as The Fall Guy, Bullet Train, and Deadpool 2, representing the stunt community.

"Stunt design has been a vital component of filmmaking since the inception of cinema. We take pride in celebrating the groundbreaking contributions of these skilled and creative artists, and we commend their unwavering dedication in achieving this significant milestone," stated Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang.

The eligibility criteria and voting procedures for the inaugural award will be disclosed in 2027 as part of the regulations for the 100th Academy Awards. The Academy's board of governors and executive leadership will also finalize the details regarding the award's presentation. To date, only two stunt performers have received Oscar statuettes, both of which were honorary: Yakima Canutt in 1966 and Hal Needham in 2012.

In his statement, David expressed, "This has been a long journey for many of us. Chris O’Hara and I have dedicated years to making this moment a reality, building on the efforts of stunt professionals who have tirelessly sought recognition over the years. We are immensely grateful. Thank you, Academy." The most recent new award category introduced was for achievement in casting, which was established in 2024 and will be presented at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards for films released in 2025.
