Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma collaborated with Malayalam cinema icon Mohanlal in his 2002 film Company, which achieved significant commercial success. More than 22 years after the film's release, the director has disclosed that he was not initially taken with Mohanlal's acting abilities.

In a recent interview with Milestone Makers, Ram reflected on his experience working on the film Company and recounting the script to Mohanlal.

He remarked, “When I first met him regarding Company, I anticipated that he would pose numerous intricate questions about the script and his character. I was somewhat prepared for that, but after I completed the narration, the sole question he asked was, ‘Sir, how many days do you want?’ This was quite an anti-climactic moment for me. I believe he approaches everyone in this manner, not just me, as he is an actor who comprehends the craft and the filmmaking process, and I think he operates on a foundation of trust.”

As Ram Gopal commenced filming for Company, he found himself dissatisfied with Mohanlal’s performance, which led him to request additional takes. Eventually, he came to the realization that Mohanlal had delivered his finest performance right from the outset.

Ram Gopal explained, “Initially, I had concerns about his performance. I felt he wasn’t executing it correctly, so I kept asking for more takes. After reviewing 6-7 takes, I discovered that the very first one was indeed the best.” He characterized Mohanlal as a “highly instinctive actor.”

About the film

In the 2002 film, Mohanlal portrayed the character of Veerapalli Srinivasan IPS, who played a crucial role in dismantling the gang led by Malik (Ajay Devgn) and Chandu (Vivek Oberoi). The film achieved significant commercial success at the box office.
