RGV Says Hindi Producer Doubted Allu Arjun: ‘North Audience Will Puke on Pushpa Guy’s Face’

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has openly expressed his admiration for Sukumar and Allu Arjun's works, particularly Pushpa: The Rise and the recently released Pushpa 2: The Rule. In a discussion with Pinkvilla, Varma reminisced about an encounter with a prominent Hindi producer who had previously dismissed the Telugu film, humorously suggesting that the producer is likely experiencing regrets following the success of Pushpa.
Ram Gopal Varma on Pushpa
RGV expressed his belief that no one in Bollywood possesses the capability to create a film akin to Pushpa 2 due to contrasting sensibilities. He remarked, “I do not believe anyone can produce a film like Pushpa 2 in Bollywood. This is not due to a lack of ability, but rather a difference in thought processes. I prefer not to mention the producer’s name… he is quite prominent. He conveyed to an acquaintance of mine, after viewing Pushpa 1, that the northern audience would be repulsed by this individual.”
The filmmaker further elaborated that the remark was not directed at Arjun specifically, but rather at the character of Pushpa Raj—a daily wage laborer who ascends to become a red sanders smuggler. “What prompted that statement? I believe it is unrelated to Bunny (Allu Arjun). It pertains to the character, as he favours individuals with six-pack abs and striking looks. He must be experiencing distress over this. It is a matter of differing sensibilities,” he stated.
Past praise for the film
Since the release of Pushpa 2, RGV has expressed his admiration for the film. After viewing it, he shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “It is exceedingly uncommon for Indian cinema to feature well-defined characters, and it is even rarer for a star to set aside their own persona to fully embody a role. Witnessing a character like PUSHPA is one of those exceptional instances where, as a viewer, I genuinely felt that a character like Pushpa could exist in real life.”
Pushpa 2 premiered in theatres on December 6 of the previous year and has since become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2024, with the filmmakers reporting a worldwide collection exceeding ₹1831 crore.
