RGV Blames Big B (Jokingly) for Aag’s Burnout: ‘But I’ll Take the Heat’

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, recognized for his works such as Sarkar and RGV Ki Aag, recently reflected on the shortcomings of his 2007 film. During a discussion with Komal Nahta on The Game Changers, he humorously attributed the film's failure to Amitabh Bachchan, Sascha Sippy, and even a poster designer.
Ram Gopal Varma admits not making Aag seriously
Ram Gopal Varma acknowledges his lack of seriousness in creating Aag. When questioned about the possibility of remaking Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, he shared an alternative storyline he had originally envisioned—a revenge narrative involving a mill owner who hires a gangster to avenge his son's murder. He conceded that had he approached it with the same level of realism as he did with Satya, the film might have fared better.
Varma disclosed that the concept for a sequel to Sholay was first suggested to him by Sascha Sippy, the grandson of the original film's producer, GP Sippy. According to Varma, Sascha mentioned they had a plot where, following the Mehbooba song, Gabbar Singh becomes a father to a child with Helen’s character. Years later, this child, referred to as Jr Gabbar, would seek revenge by kidnapping Veeru and Basanti, prompting their son to pursue retribution. The production team even considered involving Jackie Chan in the project, but Varma ultimately chose not to participate in this iteration.
He also recounted that a poster designer had envisioned a tribute to Sholay, portraying Amitabh Bachchan’s character in an exaggerated manner. Initially, Varma felt this approach lacked authenticity, but he was advised, “Sholay is now a legend, and legends cannot appear real and ordinary.” Inspired by this viewpoint, he presented the idea to Amitabh, who agreed to it based on their successful partnership in Sarkar.
Ram Gopal Varma blames Amitabh Bachchan for Aag's failure
Reflecting on the debacle, RGV chuckled and remarked, “In the realm of filmmaking, the initial and most significant error is deciding on your project. After that, you lose control over the outcome. Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag experienced a similar downfall. The true blame lies with Sascha Sippy, the poster designer, and those who were seated beside me. In a sense, Bachchan Sahaab is also part of it. However, I accept full responsibility for the outcome.”
Regarding Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
Released in 2007, RGV Ki Aag was a reinterpretation of Sholay and starred Amitabh Bachchan, Mohanlal, Ajay Devgn, and Sushmita Sen. Upon its release, it received harsh criticism from both critics and audiences, resulting in a significant box office failure.
