Kolkata has been witnessing fierce protests to demand justice for the on-duty doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. People from different walks of life, including celebrities, doctors, IT professionals, and homemakers, took to the streets of the City of Joy to demand justice.
On Sunday, a group of actresses, including Swastika Mukherjee, sat on a dharna at Esplanade. On Tuesday, she again took part in another protest at Shyambazar. There, she shared a smiling selfie with fellow protestors and a group of netizens trolled her for her smile. The actress slammed the trolls on her social media and said that she has the right to smile and she is not a criminal.
Meanwhile, after playwright Chandan Sen, theatre workers Biplab Bandyopadhyay and Srijita, National Award-winning actress Sudipta Chakraborty returned her award. In 2013, she received a ‘special award’ from the West Bengal Government for contributing to Bengali cinema. On Tuesday, she emailed the department to return the award. She further suggested that it was Swastika who gave her courage and it was Kanchan Mullick’s derogatory comment that instigated her to take the step.
Kanchan made controversial statements about the participating junior doctors. He further said that those celebrities who received government honours might want to return their awards.
