Anurag Kashyap, the director of the first two seasons of Sacred Games, has disclosed his efforts to cast a South Indian actress for the acclaimed series. The director of Black Friday expressed that he initially considered Malayalam actress Manju Warrier and the renowned Nayanthara for the role of a RAW agent. Further details reveal the reasons behind the decision not to cast these South Indian actresses in Sacred Games, despite Kashyap advocating for their inclusion.

'Manju Warrier, Nayanthara considered for Sacred Games'

Sacred Games, a Netflix series created by Vikramaditya Motwane and featuring Saif Ali Khan, has garnered significant popularity. In a recent roundtable discussion, Anurag Kashyap mentioned three candidates for the role of RAW agent Kusum Devi Yadav, which ultimately went to Amruta Subhash in the second season.

“We were attempting to secure her (Manju) for the role originally intended for Amrita Subhash... We proposed her, Nayanthara, and another actress to Netflix,” Anurag stated, according to a recent PTI report.

However, he elaborated on the casting process, noting that Netflix did not have a presence in India at that time, and all decisions were made through their US office.

“At that time, OTT platforms were not particularly focused on South Indian cinema. They were not considering the South market. Their preference was for actresses from regions where their market was established, primarily Maharashtra or similar areas,” remarked the esteemed filmmaker, who has consistently championed South Indian films.

It is worth mentioning that Anurag Kashyap is set to present the Hindi adaptation of Manju Warrier’s Malayalam film Footage. This Hindi version, which also stars Vishak Nair and Gayathri Ashok, is scheduled for theatrical release on March 7, 2025.
