Former DGP R. Sreelekha provided a critical review of Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film L2 Empuraan on her YouTube channel, condemning it for its portrayal of violence and political themes. As reported by OnManorama, the former IPS officer expressed that the film conveys a misleading message to its audience.
Sreelekha on L2 Empuraan
In her review, Sreelekha mentioned that her interest in L2 Empuraan stemmed from her enjoyment of its 2019 predecessor, Lucifer. However, she expressed disappointment with the sequel, stating that it attempts to incite communal discord by misrepresenting the events of the 2002 Gujarat riots. She also highlighted a contradiction in the film, where Mohanlal’s character denounces narcotics as a "dirty business" while simultaneously engaging in violent acts to eliminate that very business.
According to the translated report, she remarked in Malayalam, “Empuraan is likely one of the most overhyped films in recent memory. I almost left the theater midway through. While Marco faced criticism for its violent content, no one seems to address the glorified violence in this film, which negatively impacts children and society at large.” She acknowledged her admiration for Mohanlal and referred to Prithviraj as a "good actor."
Sreelekha further noted that she has been let down by Mohanlal’s recent roles, particularly as she once served as a police officer. She expressed her sadness at seeing him portray criminals or smugglers. Having viewed the film prior to its re-editing, she criticized specific scenes, stating, “There are numerous instances of violence against women and children, which are intentionally included to distort the political narrative in Kerala.”
For context, Sreelekha is recognized as the first female IPS officer from Kerala, retiring in 2020 as the Director General of the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services after a distinguished thirty-year career.
About L2 Empuraan
Sreelekha is not the initial individual to voice concerns regarding the portrayal of violence and political themes in L2 Empuraan. Within a week of its release on March 27, the film's producers decided to either modify or remove certain scenes, which included altering the name of the antagonist. In spite of the surrounding controversy, the film has achieved a remarkable box office collection of over ₹250 crore globally, making it the highest-grossing film in the Malayalam language.
