R Madhavan's Unique Path: 25 Years of Staying True to Himself in Film
1 month ago | 5 Views
Actor R. Madhavan commenced his cinematic career embodying the archetypal boy-next-door in films such as Minnale and its Hindi adaptation, Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein. Over the years, he has carved out a distinct space for himself by portraying relatable characters. His latest project, Hisaab Barabar, continues this trend, featuring him as a railway ticket inspector. In a discussion with HT regarding the film and his affinity for 'relatable' roles, Madhavan reveals the key to maintaining his relevance in the industry.
On being relevant over 25 years
Excluding cameo roles, Madhavan has participated in a limited number of Hindi films in the past decade. Notably, Hisaab Barabar marks only his fourth Bollywood project since the release of Tanu Weds Manu Returns a decade ago. "I utilize this time to explore and observe people," he explains.
The actor underscores that his observations have been instrumental in preserving his relevance. "The reason I have managed to remain pertinent after 25 years, without resorting to the clichéd superhero traits of six-pack abs and dance skills, is my ability to accurately portray the most challenging generation in history," he states.
On portraying the ‘most difficult generation’
Expounding on what distinguishes this generation, he remarks, "Individuals of my generation, globally, are products of a middle-class upbringing. They excel in various fields, including IT, politics, and business. We have had the unique opportunity to witness rapid global transformation, coupled with the challenge of adapting to it. Our lives have transitioned from STD booths to pagers to smartphones. We have had to strive to remain relevant."
Madhavan further notes that representing this cross-section of the empowered common man from Generation X has become his niche. "Few actors depict the empowered common man of this generation. The common man is no longer merely 'bechaara', and I have been keenly observing how to portray that," he concludes.
Being selective in film choices can present its own unique challenges. When asked if there is a concern about being forgotten, he responds, "I have learned how to stay relevant. If you do not appear in films for four years, people will forget you due to the intense competition. However, if you have established a distinct presence, you can endure."
Directed by Ashwini Dhir, Hisaab Barabar narrates the tale of an ordinary individual who embarks on a mission to uncover a significant scam within a private bank. In addition to Madhavan, the film features Neil Nitin Mukesh, Kirti Kulhari, and Rashami Desai in key roles. It premiered on Zee5 on January 24.
