Actor R. Madhavan has addressed the contentious stalking narrative present in his Bollywood debut, "Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein." Released in 2001, this cult classic marked Madhavan's entry into Hindi cinema and featured Dia Mirza and Saif Ali Khan. In the film, Madhavan's character, Maddy, engages in stalking and deceit to get closer to Mirza's character.
Madhavan on Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein
In a discussion about "Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein," Madhavan noted that while Maddy's intentions were not scrutinized, viewers have criticized the film for romanticizing 'problematic' behavior. Nevertheless, Madhavan disagrees with this viewpoint. In a conversation with Mashable India, he stated, “I completely disagree with all this. Concepts like green flag and blue flag are merely the musings of idle individuals. I believe it is essential to embody the qualities of a gentleman. From a young age, we have been taught how to communicate with women and how to approach them, which has always been an integral part of our culture. While there are certainly miscreants, one cannot evaluate us through a Western lens.”
The actor further reinforced his stance during the discussion, asserting that in large cities, it is often challenging to meet women without some form of 'tracking' or 'following.' He remarked, “To those who label it as problematic, I ask: in the past, if we wished to meet a girl in Mumbai, we did so with love and respect. If we found ourselves in an unfamiliar city and wanted to connect with a girl, how could we do it? Without tracking her or following her home, it would be nearly impossible to reach out.”
