In recent weeks, there has been considerable debate regarding the ability of Diljit Dosanjh and filmmaker Honey Trehan to showcase their film Punjab ‘95 in its intended form on the big screen. The actor and director have been actively defending their project against the censorship imposed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has suggested approximately 120 edits. Both Dosanjh and Trehan are adamant about releasing the film in its unaltered state, as they wish for the complete narrative to be conveyed to the audience. Inspired by a real-life individual, the film has sparked significant interest, and both Dosanjh and Trehan have made it clear that they will not support the film if any modifications are implemented.

Diljit Dosanjh and Honey Trehan on Punjab ‘95 vs. CBFC

Following the release of Udta Punjab, Punjab ‘95 represents the second occasion on which a film featuring Diljit Dosanjh has encountered difficulties with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). During an Instagram Live session, Diljit articulated his strong position, stating, "I hope the film is released in India soon. I will only endorse it if it is presented in its entirety, without any cuts. If the film is released uncut, I will support it; otherwise, it lacks significance."

He underscored that any alterations would undermine the film’s impact and message, which they are keen to preserve. Honey Trehan shared this perspective, asserting that if the CBFC's suggested edits were implemented, his name would be absent from the director's credits. Trehan remarked, "Chaddiyan kallan. Punjab ‘95 will not feature my name as director if there are any cuts. I do not endorse the unreasonable and politically motivated demands of the CBFC. I stand by my film and my team, and I will never betray their trust. Justice will prevail, and I hope the world witnesses the uncut version soon. I hold immense respect for the martyrdom of Jaswant Singh Khalra ji."

About Punjab ‘95

The film centres on Jaswant Singh Khalra, a Sikh rights advocate recognized for revealing the extrajudicial killings of Sikh youth perpetrated by the Punjab police during the early 1990s. Khalra was also celebrated for his humanitarian efforts and held in high esteem by those who suffered oppression. The trailer offers a glimpse into his life and contributions, presenting a compelling depiction of his courage.

Produced by Ronnie Screwvala's RSVP, Punjab ‘95 boasts a talented ensemble cast that includes Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, and Suvinder Vicky. Diljit Dosanjh has confirmed that the uncut version will be released globally on February 7, 2025, in multiple countries, although its release in India is currently postponed due to an ongoing dispute with the CBFC.
