Producer of Sanya Malhotra’s 'Mrs' Slams SIFF: 'It Will Take More Than That'

Sanya Malhotra's film, Mrs., available on ZEE5, has garnered significant attention for its exploration of sexism within marriage and its innovative perspective on traditional patriarchal norms. While the film has received praise from audiences, the Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF) issued a lengthy statement criticizing its themes. In a recent interview, producer Harman Baweja addressed SIFF's comments regarding what they termed 'toxic feminism.'

Mrs. producer Harman Baweja reacts to SIFF's statement

In response to SIFF's critique, which was shared on X, Baweja expressed to News18, “I have moved beyond the point of being angered. It would take a considerable amount to provoke me. Perhaps that segment of men perceives this film as a definitive portrayal of all men, which is not accurate. The presence of male and female characters in a film does not imply that all men and women conform to those traits. Each household is distinct, with its own unique atmosphere, customs, and culinary practices.”

Baweja emphasized the importance of contextualizing the film, noting that Mrs. tells the story of a specific woman, with many women finding resonance in various aspects of it.

“There may be individuals, particularly from more progressive households, who do not personally identify with the film but can appreciate it because they have witnessed similar dynamics in their own families. This is the perspective from which the film should be understood,” he remarked.

What did SIFF write?

In their critique of Mrs., SIFF questioned the film's narrative, stating, “What stress does a woman feel while chopping vegetables, cooking on a gas stove, or washing dishes while wearing gloves? None at all.”

They further asserted that men should not be expected to share ‘50% of household chores, as 70-80% of the materials, clothing, furniture, and appliances are desired and enjoyed by women.’

Meanwhile, Mrs. features Sanya Malhotra in the role of Richa, with Nishant Dahiya portraying her husband Diwakar, and Kanwaljit Singh appearing as her father-in-law.

Produced by Baweja Studios in collaboration with Zee Studios, the film Mrs. premiered on ZEE5 on February 7, 2025.
