Kangana Ranaut's first solo directorial effort, Emergency, is finally making its way to theaters this month after a bunch of delays. The film dives into the events surrounding former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's declaration of Emergency in 1975, and it's faced its own set of challenges along the way. Before the release, Kangana, who serves as a Member of Parliament for the Bhartiya Janata Party, invited Priyanka Gandhi, a Congress MP, to check out her movie.

What Kangana said

In a chat with PTI, Kangana was asked if the Gandhi family had contacted her to check out Emergency, where she portrays Indira Gandhi, the grandmother of Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi. She said, “No, they didn’t reach out to me, but I did run into Priyanka Gandhi at Parliament, and she was really nice, complimenting my work and my hair. I mentioned that I made this film Emergency and suggested she might want to watch it. She replied, ‘Okay, maybe.’ I think if they’re open to it, they’d really enjoy the film.”

Last year, after winning a seat as an MP from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh on a BJP ticket, Kangana called out the Gandhi siblings—Priyanka and Rahul—referring to them as “nepo kids” and saying they seemed “weird, like they just dropped in from Mars.” She expressed her strong dislike for Congress, labeling it a party steeped in nepotism, which she has actively opposed in Bollywood. “For me, Congress has always been a terrible party. The nepotism within it has been a major issue because I faced the same kind of system in my industry. I’ve spoken out against it and fought back. It was something that was exploiting me... Nepotism, groupism, dynastic politics,” Kangana shared with Times Now.
