Priya Dutt on Sanju: Loved Ranbir Kapoor, But This Detail Missed the Mark
20 days ago | 5 Views
Priya Dutt, a politician and sister of Sanjay Dutt, has voiced her dissatisfaction with Rajkumar Hirani's film "Sanju," which features Ranbir Kapoor portraying her brother. She believes the biopic fails to adequately represent the intricacies of her brother's life and frequently questions the minimal emphasis placed on their parents, Sunil Dutt and Nargis. She stated that it cannot truly be classified as a biopic.
Priya Dutt on Sanju biopic
In a discussion with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Priya addressed the biopic that starred Paresh Rawal as Sunil Dutt and Manisha Koirala as Nargis Dutt. Vicky Kaushal also appeared in the film, portraying a friend of Sanjay Dutt.
Priya conveyed her curiosity regarding the limited emphasis on her mother and family, noting that the narrative primarily centered on one friend, which she described as an "amalgamation of many friends."
She remarked, “I felt that the film did not adequately represent my mother or my father. There was significant potential for improvement. The depiction of the father-son relationship, in particular, could have been explored in greater depth.”
She was also inquired about whether she had ever expressed her feelings to Rajkumar. Priya responded, “I was tempted... However, I believe they had a different vision in mind. I didn’t reach out to him. Their primary focus was solely on Sanju, which I understand—and his life. It turned into somewhat of a caricature. Perhaps they needed to combine too many characters. It was not what I anticipated. I think it leaned more towards entertainment... I really enjoyed Ranbir Kapoor's performance. He portrayed Sanju exceptionally well. Nevertheless, I feel it didn’t truly qualify as a biopic. It was an entertaining film that only highlighted certain facets of his life. The depth was lacking."
During the interview, Priya mentioned that she had shared her feelings with her brother Sanjay, who simply replied, “Now, what?"
About Sanju
Sanjay Dutt's life, encompassing his struggles with drug addiction, personal relationships, a prison sentence for firearm possession linked to the 1993 serial blasts, and his connections with family and friends, has been thoroughly explored in the film "Sanju," which premiered in 2018.
The film achieved remarkable success; however, it faced criticism for allegedly whitewashing events, receiving backlash from the media, and glorifying the controversial aspects of Dutt's life. In response to these criticisms, director Rajkumar Hirani defended the film.
"The term 'whitewashing' is being used quite liberally. If you have seen the film, what crime did Sanju commit? Yes, he possessed a gun, and we depicted that. We also showed that he spent five years in prison and acknowledged it as a mistake... So, where is the issue of whitewashing? What exactly have I whitewashed? I would like to understand that," Rajkumar stated during the ninth edition of the International Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM).
