Malayalam actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran completed the last leg of the promotions of his next directorial, Empuraan, in Bengaluru on March 26. The film, written by Murali Gopy and led by Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, is the second instalment of what the writer-director combo has envisioned as a trilogy. The first was 2019’s Lucifer, which introduced audiences to Stephen Nedumpally (Mohanlal), a formidable figure in Kerala’s political landscape, who, we are also told, has a mysterious past.

Empuraan delves into a specific aspect of the narrative, focusing on Stephen as Khureshi Ab’raam and the reasons behind his transformation into this persona. Although Lucifer may be viewed as an independent film, Prithviraj has strongly asserted that to fully grasp the complete character development of Stephen Nedumpally, also known as Khureshi Ab’raam, it is essential to view the third and concluding installment of the trilogy.

Prithviraj's Tyson back on track?

This naturally raises the question: Is L3 Prithviraj's upcoming project his next directorial venture? The actor-director has indicated that he intends to fulfill a previous commitment. While speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Prithviraj mentioned that his next directorial effort will be in partnership with Hombale Films, a collaboration that was initially announced a few years ago under the title Tyson. However, he did not provide further details on whether the project will still be titled Tyson or specify a timeline, considering he also has acting commitments, including a film with SS Rajamouli and Salaar Shouryanga Parva with Prashant Neel and Hombale Films.

Given that Prithviraj has been quoted as saying that he needs at least 2 years to direct a film, that would also mean that L3 or whatever he chooses to call the final segment of Lucifer, is several years away. For now, fans will get Empuraan on March 27. The film will be in theatres world-wide in Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, including an IMAX release. In Karnataka, Hombale Films is distributing the film, given that Prithviraj returns the favour for all of their movies in Kerala.Tyson was initially revealed in 2022, indicating yet another collaboration between Prithviraj and Murali. The promotional image suggested that Prithviraj would portray an IAS officer in the movie.
