Prime Video Faces Backlash After Weighing in on Alia Bhatt-BLACKPINK Jennie Song Debate

On Thursday, the X account of Amazon Prime Video India (formerly known as Twitter) became embroiled in a social media conflict involving fans of Alia Bhatt and BLACKPINK’s Jennie. Following a series of boycott calls and allegations of unprofessional conduct, the account subsequently removed the post that had ridiculed the situation.

Prime Video’s deleted post on the feud

Prime Video India’s X account posted a still of Alia as Rani from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, captioning it, “BLACKPINK fans, we bet you can hear this image (sobbing and side-eye emojis).” While Alia’s fans found it hilarious that the OTT platform agreed with them, leaving comments like, “Prime video India ain't coming slow,” Jennie’s fans were not as thrilled.

Numerous comments on the post swiftly accused the individuals involved of seeking attention and displaying unprofessional behaviour. Some users even advocated for a boycott of the platform. Although Prime Video India has since removed the post, the backlash from K-pop fans persists. One outraged fan expressed on X, “Prime Video India has deleted its post that attempted to gain attention by using JENNIE and BLACKPINK's name to promote their uninspired content! BOYCOTT PRIME VIDEO INDIA. APOLOGIZE TO JENNIE @PrimeVideoIN.”

Another user on X remarked, “I wonder what kind of person is responsible for this post; without Jennie, there is no hit tweet, desperately trying to attract attention to your mediocre show.” One fan went so far as to demand the dismissal of the administrator, stating, “Please terminate this admin for their unprofessional conduct @PrimeVideo @PrimeVideoIN.” Another fan labelled it a hate tweet, declaring, “I honestly will not watch Prime Video anymore, as @PrimeVideoIN's admin was unprofessional and made a hate tweet about Jennie solely for likes!”

A fan found it amusing that the post had been removed, commenting, “that army intern at Prime Video India is probably getting fired now, I can't stop laughing.” Additionally, there was some discord among fans, particularly those of BLACKPINK's Jisoo, who expressed concerns about how they would access the latest episode of Newtopia. One user on X remarked, “Sooyas support Prime India, so remember to watch Newtopia on Prime Video tomorrow.” Another user noted, “Blinks are consistently the most problematic. I mean, are you aware that Newtopia is still airing on Prime Video?”

What happened

On Tuesday, Jennie unveiled a teaser for her upcoming song, "Like Jennie," set to be released on March 7. Fans of Alia quickly noted that the song's thumps, beats, and vocals bear a resemblance to "Rani’s Theme" from the film "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani". In response to this comparison, some of Jennie's supporters expressed their displeasure by sharing racially charged comments directed at Alia and India.
