Aamir Khan, often referred to as Bollywood's "Mr Perfectionist," has recently voiced his strong opposition to films that perpetuate patriarchal narratives, expressing concern that such portrayals are regressive for society. In a candid interview with the BBC Asian Network, he lamented the prevalence of chauvinistic films in the Indian film industry, stating, "Not nice. It pushes us back a decade". Khan emphasized that while society has made significant strides towards modernity, remnants of patriarchal attitudes still linger, influencing public perception and storytelling in cinema.

He articulated a profound belief that cinema can shape societal values, noting that emotional storytelling often resonates more deeply than logical arguments. "You can try and convince a person in an argument with logic... but that only goes so far," he explained. Instead, he believes that stories and characters can touch hearts and inspire change. Khan pointed out that many men feel threatened by women's independence, suggesting that these insecurities reflect a broader societal issue where men believe they should dictate the extent of women's freedoms.

Khan's commitment to addressing social issues through film is evident in his recent project, Laapataa Ladies, which focuses on women's empowerment and has been recognized as India's official entry for the Oscars. He expressed pride in creating narratives that challenge traditional gender roles and promote equality. "I have grown up with really strong women around me," he shared, highlighting how this upbringing has shaped his perspective on gender dynamics.

As he continues to work on new projects, including a sequel to his acclaimed film Taare Zameen Par, Khan remains dedicated to using his platform to advocate for positive social change. His efforts reflect a broader vision for cinema as a tool for progress, urging society to confront and dismantle outdated patriarchal norms.
