Payal Kapadia's Joyful Spirit Shines Through Loss at the 2025 Golden Globes

Payal Kapadia experienced a disappointing evening at the 2025 Golden Globes, as both she and her film, All We Imagine As Light, were unable to secure any awards for which they were nominated. Nevertheless, the director maintained her composure and applauded the winners. Despite losing the esteemed Best Director award to Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, she managed to smile broadly and show her support.
Kapadia made history as only the third Asian woman to receive a nomination for Best Director at the Golden Globes when the nominations were revealed late last year. This recognition alone is significant, as it has drawn considerable attention to her work and to Indian cinema as a whole.
Her film, All We Imagine As Light, has garnered acclaim during the American awards season, receiving nominations at both the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards. Notably, it was the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival the previous year. However, it lost to Emilia Perez in the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture category at the Golden Globes.
The film had a delayed theatrical release in India in late 2024, following its success at various international film festivals. Since January 2025, it has also been available for streaming, making its debut on Disney+ Hotstar.
Controversially, the Film Federation of India did not choose All We Imagine As Light as the country's official entry for the Oscars. Instead, Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies was selected to represent India in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards, although it ultimately did not make it to the shortlist.
The 82nd Golden Globes commenced on Sunday night at 8 p.m. EST (6:30 a.m. IST), with the intention of recapturing the lighthearted and comedic spirit of previous ceremonies hosted by figures such as Ricky Gervais or the duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. This year, comedian Nikki Glaser is at the helm of the event. In India, viewers can watch the live broadcast on Lionsgate Play, which has been streaming the show since Monday morning at 6:30 a.m.
