The trend of lookalike competitions is also gaining traction among the desi community. In October, a group of children in New York initiated a global phenomenon by hosting a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest in Central Park, which even attracted the presence of the actor himself. Following the success of this event, lookalike competitions featuring figures such as Drake, Bernie Sanders, Harry Styles, Zendaya, Jeremy Allen White, and Zayn Malik have emerged across the globe.
Will the real Abhay Deol please stand up?
On Sunday, a comparable event took place at Hauz Khas Park in Delhi in honour of Bollywood actor Abhay Deol. The Instagram account Films From Underground, dedicated to cinema enthusiasts, announced a prize of ₹500, along with three tickets for film screenings and two packets of chewing gum. This enticing offer drew numerous participants, including several individuals eager to secure a date with someone resembling Abhay Deol.
A man appeared wearing a black sleeveless shirt, mimicking Abhay's recent provocative posts on Instagram. Another individual displayed a black eye, reminiscent of one of Abhay's most widely shared incidents when he attended an awards ceremony following an altercation with a music company.
Ultimately, a man wearing a yellow sweater and sporting a dishevelled mullet was awarded the crown (₹500). The audience's reaction was largely unimpressed. One individual remarked, “Look away the competition,” while another commented, “Abhay Deol from Meesho.”
Regrettably, Abhay Deol was not present at the event.
Timothee Chalamet fans set trends
In October, actor Timothée Chalamet unexpectedly attended a look-alike contest held in Lower Manhattan on Sunday. The event attracted hundreds of spectators, prompted a dispersal order from law enforcement, and resulted in at least one arrest.
Accompanied by security personnel, Chalamet took a moment to pose for photographs with his high-cheeked, curly-haired impersonators, some of whom were dressed as characters from his films, including Wonka and Dune.
However, as the aspiring Chalamets began to walk down a red carpet in Washington Square Park, police instructed the large crowd to disperse, issuing a $500 fine to the organizers for conducting an “unpermitted costume contest.”
At least one participant was escorted away in handcuffs, although the police did not provide immediate details regarding the reason. A spokesperson for the NYPD indicated that charges were forthcoming.
“It began as a lighthearted joke, but it has now escalated into chaos,” remarked Paige Nguyen, a producer for the YouTube personality Anthony Po, who organized the event.
