Parambrata Chatterjee Addresses Anurag Kashyap's 'Ghatia' Comment on Bengali Cinema

Actor Parambrata Chatterjee has addressed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap's comment describing Bengali cinema as "ghatia." In his response, Parambrata acknowledged that there has been a decline in attention towards mainstream commercial Bengali cinema.

Parambrata Chatterjee reacts

Parambrata addressed the comments made by Anurag during a SCREEN LIVE session in Kolkata, where he joined Srijit Mukherji.

In the course of the discussion, Parambrata reacted to Anurag's assertion that Bengali cinema is "ghatia" (poor) when compared to other regional film industries.

He stated, “We have shifted our focus away from mainstream commercial Bengali cinema. When mainstream films in any industry fail, it becomes exceedingly challenging to produce alternative types of films. The audience must be substantial enough to sustain the industry. Our genre of cinema (alternative cinema) relies on surplus. Without a consistent influx of viewers, a surplus cannot exist. A sense of alienation occurred in 2011. Although Bengali cinema was experiencing a revival through filmmakers like Srijit da and Kaushik Ganguly, who were creating films appealing to a broader audience, the industry unexpectedly moved away from producing large-scale Bengali entertainers.”

Furthermore, the actor criticized Bengali filmmakers for producing inferior remakes of South Indian films, which have not resonated with the Bengali audience. He remarked, “Carelessly produced South remakes were presented to the public. The audience did not respond positively, as they could watch the same films dubbed in Hindi on national channels, leading them to avoid these low-quality Bengali remakes. The audience for Bengali cinema has diminished significantly. A large portion of West Bengal does not engage with Bengali films because they feel overlooked. Therefore, it is crucial to create mass entertainers in Bengali cinema that can generate revenue, enabling the production of other types of films.”

Currently, Parambrata Chatterjee is featured alongside Srijit Mukherji in the film Shotyi Bole Shotyi Kichhu Nei. This film is an official adaptation of the 1989 Hindi movie Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, which itself is a remake of the renowned American classic 12 Angry Men.

More about Anurag’s comment

Last year, Anurag shared there has been a fall in the quality of Bengali cinema in recent times. The Kennedy director spoke about it at the inauguration of the first Kolkata French Film Festival. He also attended a seminar where he made comments on Bengali cinema.

He said that the fall in Hindi films is not as evident as the fall in the quality of Bengali cinema. “The fall in the quality of Hindi films is a fall from the first floor. Bengali films used to be in a far higher position. And hence, the fall is so evident,” he said.
