Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur recently made an appearance on the red carpet at the Jagran Film Festival, where he opened up about the changing landscape of acting, his experiences in TV, theatre, and films, and his thoughts on censorship and collaborating with emerging talent. His insights were a blend of nostalgia and optimism, providing a fresh take on the craft of acting.

Kapur shared his strong bond with theatre, stating, “I have a passion for all three mediums – TV, films, and theatre. My journey kicked off in theatre, and that’s where I first found my footing. That’s why I feel such a strong connection to it.” For him, theatre is significant as it represents the start of his acting journey.

Looking back at the evolution of the acting scene, Kapur noted, “Back in my day, we were a smaller group, and there was a certain solitude in this profession. Nowadays, so many people are stepping into acting. They must feel a sense of camaraderie, and you can see the joy on their faces.”

Even with his extensive experience, Kapur admitted he hasn’t directed a film since Mausam, saying, “I have plenty of stories written down, but I haven’t mustered the courage to approach a producer for support. If a friend or someone I trust invites me to direct, I’d be thrilled to take it on.”

Kapur shared his thoughts on censorship in a more personal light. He believes that it should be a matter of personal choice. “In the end, it’s up to me to decide what I want to watch. How can I dictate what others should see? If you’re curious about something, you’ll go look for it. It’s all about your mindset. If you’re interested in a certain type of content, you’ll track it down. That’s why I think censorship should be a personal thing, based on what you choose to engage with.” He emphasized the importance of individual choice, noting that with the internet, people can easily tailor their content consumption to fit their own tastes and intelligence.

When it comes to his passion for collaborating with younger actors, Kapur said, “A flower is just a bud before it blossoms, and it has its own unique charm. I really enjoy working with young talent. It’s a chance to learn from them and discover new things about myself. It’s such a beautiful process. I love teaming up with new directors and exploring fresh perspectives and approaches.”

Right now, Kapur is busy going through new scripts. While he’s not ready to share any details yet, he hinted, “I’m checking out scripts, and once I settle on something, you’ll be the first to know.”
