Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his profound sorrow regarding the death of esteemed actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away in a Mumbai hospital on Friday at the age of 87. Describing him as a legend of Indian cinema, Modi remarked that Kumar's artistic contributions will continue to motivate future generations.

On Friday, Modi expressed his condolences on X, previously known as Twitter, regarding the death of Manoj Kumar and paid tribute to his enduring legacy.

"I am profoundly saddened by the loss of the legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was a true icon of Indian cinema, renowned for his patriotic fervor, which was evident in his films. Manoj Ji's contributions sparked a sense of national pride and will inspire future generations. My heartfelt thoughts are with his family and fans during this time of sorrow. Om Shanti," he stated.

In addition to his message, Modi shared two images of the deceased actor. One of the photographs depicted a heartfelt moment in which the Prime Minister and the actor were shaking hands.

Bollywood icon Manoj Kumar dies at 87

On Friday, Manoj Kumar passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai. According to news agency ANI, he died at 4:03 AM at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. His body will be available for viewing at his residence in Juhu starting Friday afternoon, allowing colleagues from the industry and fans to pay their last respects. The cremation is expected to occur on Saturday.

ANI reported that the cause of death was cardiogenic shock resulting from an acute myocardial infarction, a serious heart attack. Additionally, it was confirmed that Manoj had been suffering from decompensated liver cirrhosis in recent months, which had adversely affected his health. He was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, following a deterioration in his condition. Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit expressed his sorrow to ANI, stating, “It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of the legendary Dadasaheb Phalke award winner, our inspiration, and the 'lion' of the Indian film industry, Manoj Kumar Ji.”

Manoj Kumar established a significant presence in Hindi cinema, with his memorable performances in films such as Shaheed, Upkar, and Rang De Basanti, which strongly resonated with the patriotic feelings of the Indian audience.
