Animal rights organization PETA has cautioned Danny McBride, the voice actor from Kung Fu Panda 2, regarding the purported inclusion of a live monkey in the fourth season of his HBO comedy series, The Righteous Gemstones.
Upon noticing what they believe to be a real capuchin monkey in the trailer for the show, PETA has indicated that they may resort to an unusual method of protest: sending the actor monkey feces.
PETA warns Danny McBride
According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, PETA has issued a warning to Danny regarding the trailer for The Righteous Gemstones. The trailer features a capuchin monkey at the end, tilting its head inquisitively and placing an object in a character's mouth.
A PETA spokesperson stated, “Following the release of the trailer that showcased a capuchin monkey, PETA primatologist Debbie Metzler urged creator Danny McBride to refrain from including live primates in the show and to pledge against using wild animals in his future projects.”
The organization has indicated that they have not received any response to their request. The statement further noted, "Should the show be broadcast with a live monkey, PETA is prepared to send Danny a special delivery: a pile of 'monkey p**p' to protest his unethical choice to exploit a real primate instead of utilizing humane technology to create a digital version or omitting the monkey scene entirely."
At this time, it remains unclear whether the capuchin featured in the trailer is a live animal or a CGI creation. Neither the actor's representative nor Warner Bros. Discovery has yet addressed the warning.
About the show
The Righteous Gemstones is a comedic series that explores the extravagant and often uncomfortable dynamics of the Gemstone family, a dysfunctional group of televangelists and megachurch leaders. Leading this family is Dr. Elijah "Eli" Gemstone II, portrayed by John Goodman. Created by Danny McBride, who also co-writes and stars as Jesse Gemstone, Eli's eldest son and a prominent family member, the series recently launched its fourth season on March 9, marking the conclusion of the show.
Previously, the series has featured various animal scenes, including a moment in season 2 where Baby Billy (played by Walton Goggins) takes his son Harmon (portrayed by Jeremy T. Thomas) to a pet store to adopt a dog, and a disturbing scene in season 3 involving a CGI cow being struck by a monster truck.
In her statement, Debbie voiced her disappointment regarding Danny's decision to use animals rather than relying on technology. PETA has urged viewers to "avoid this show" and has called on Danny to "reconsider his poor choices and utilize CGI and other advanced technologies in his future endeavors."
