P Jayachandran, Iconic Playback Singer of Malayalam Cinema, Dies at 80

P Jayachandran, the renowned playback singer and actor who was celebrated for his remarkable contributions to Malayalam and Tamil cinema, has passed away. The National Award-winning artist died today, January 9, 2025, at a private hospital in Thrissur, Kerala. According to reports, the 80-year-old was taken to the hospital after collapsing at his home at 7 PM this evening. It is important to note that P Jayachandran has been experiencing liver-related health issues for the past few months.
P Jayachandran’s illustrious playback singing career
The renowned artist made his film debut as a playback singer in 1965, contributing the song ‘Oru Mullappoomaalayumayi’ for the movie Kunjali Marakkar. Nevertheless, it was the song ‘Manjalayil Mungi Thorthi,’ released in 1967 from the film Kalithozhan, that marked a significant turning point in P Jayachandran’s career. Over a span of more than sixty years, this legendary singer became one of the most in-demand playback vocalists in the Malayalam and Tamil film industries. Additionally, he has left an indelible mark in various other major languages with numerous iconic songs throughout the decades.
According to available records, P Jayachandran has performed more than 16,000 songs throughout his illustrious career, which has lasted over 58 years. The esteemed vocalist received the National Film Award for Best Playback Singer for his rendition of ‘Siva Shankara Sarva’ in the Malayalam film Sree Narayana Guru, released in 1986. Additionally, he has been honoured with the Kerala State Film Award for Best Playback Singer on five occasions, specifically in the years 1972, 1978, 1999, 2004, and 2015, and was the recipient of the JC Daniel Award in 2020.

The seasoned playback singer also ventured into acting on a few occasions throughout his film career. P Jayachandran portrayed the character of Namboothiri in the Malayalam film Nakhakshathangal, which was released in 1986 and is based on a script by MT Vasudevan Nair, directed by Hariharan. This classic film is presently available for free streaming on YouTube. Subsequently, in 2012, Jayachandran returned to the acting scene with Trivandrum Lodge, directed by VK Prakash, where he took on the role of Narayanan Nair, the father of Anoop Menon’s character, Ravi Shankar.
