Oscars Controversy: Kieran Culkin’s Speech Silenced Over Jeremy Strong Remark
19 days ago | 5 Views
Kieran Culkin received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor on Sunday in Los Angeles, but his acceptance speech drew attention when a segment was censored during the live broadcast due to his mention of former Succession co-star Jeremy Strong, as reported by Marca.com.
Culkin triumphed over competitors including Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Yura Borisov (Anora), and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice) to secure the award for his performance in A Real Pain.
The 42-year-old's remarks blended humor, gratitude, and an unexpected family moment. However, the speech took an interesting turn when it was censored following his special acknowledgment of fellow nominee Strong.
Culkin began his address by stating, “Jeremy, you're amazing in The Apprentice.” He was quickly muted as he added, “I love your work, it's f**king great.”
Realizing he had used inappropriate language, Culkin covered his mouth but continued, saying, “I'm not supposed to single anyone out.”
“It’s favoritism. Anyway, but you were great.”
His speech sparked considerable discussion online, with one user on X commenting: “Succession is one of the greatest shows of all time.”
Another remarked, “Jeremy Strong was astounding in The Apprentice,” while a third added, “Jeremy should’ve won man, he was incredible in The Apprentice.”
Kieran Culkin gives special mention to wife, Jazz Charton
Culkin acknowledged his wife, Jazz Charton, during his speech and referenced a previous acceptance speech he gave after winning an Emmy Award for his role in Succession.
He shared, “She said, ‘I will give you four [children] when you win an Oscar,’” turning to his wife and asking, “Do you remember that, dear?”
Culkin reminisced at the Emmys about how his wife had suggested that winning might lead to the possibility of a third child, and if he were to win again, they could consider having two more in the future. Since their marriage in 2013, the couple has welcomed a daughter in 2019 and a son in 2021.
As he continued to express his affection for her, he reassured Charton that there was “no pressure,” adding, “I love you. I sincerely apologize for bringing this up again, and let’s get started on those children. What do you think?”
