Oscars Controversy: Vinta Nanda Challenges Priyanka Chopra and Guneet Monga's Credibility in Anuja Nomination

Adam J Graves and Suchitra Mattai's short film Anuja, set in Delhi, stand as the sole Indian entry at the Oscars 2025. The producers, Guneet Monga, Priyanka Chopra, and Mindy Kaling, conveyed their appreciation following the film's nomination in the Best Live Action Short category.
Vinta Nanda calls out ‘flawed’ Oscars system
Veteran television producer, writer, and director Vinta Nanda have raised concerns regarding the dominance of three producers in the industry. On Friday, she expressed her thoughts through a cryptic post on Instagram, remarking, “The current systems are deeply flawed. Curators receive Oscar nominations and accolades while the efforts of artists and their producers remain overshadowed. What sort of world are we inhabiting?”
Actor-director Ananth Mahadevan also weighed in on her post, stating, “It all revolves around connections and networking; your own contributions become invisible and uninteresting to these powerful entities.” Vinta responded, “We must address this issue now. Enough is enough,” to which Ananth replied, “There are individuals in positions of great power and influence who choose to overlook you and disregard your work. There exists an inexplicable bias against those who diligently pursue their craft.”
Vinita's dig at anuja's producers’
Vinta clarified the target of her criticism. She stated, “The producers associated with Anuja are not comparable to Guneet Monga and Priyanka Chopra, who is prominently listed as the first two producers. While I have no doubt that Anuja is an exceptional film, akin to The Elephant Whisperers, it has become increasingly common for well-known figures to emerge as producers after a film's completion, leveraging their established networks.”
She elaborated, “What these individuals are essentially doing is curating and integrating themselves into the film's profits and business. Technically, they do not fulfil the role of producers and should not be the ones accepting awards on stage. Those involved in marketing and promoting the film to festivals after its completion often receive recognition for a project in which they played no direct role. It is imperative that the actual production team is acknowledged for their contributions.”
Vinta emphasized that her critique is not solely aimed at Priyanka and Guneet, but rather at the broader Oscars and film festival framework. She suggested that, given Guneet's membership in the Academy and their mutually beneficial relationship, both should reflect on the fairness of exclusively endorsing films associated with Guneet, rather than seeking out lesser-known works and appropriately crediting their creators.
Anuja is competing against A Lien, I'm Not a Robot, The Last Ranger, and The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent at the Oscars 2025. The film tells the story of a talented nine-year-old named Anuja, who faces a pivotal choice between pursuing education and working in a factory alongside her sister, a decision that will significantly impact their futures. The cast includes Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag. Guneet previously produced the 2023 Academy Award-winning documentary short film The Elephant Whisperers.
