Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman has passed away at the age of 95. Reports indicate that the esteemed actor and his spouse, Betsy Arakawa, were discovered deceased at their residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Thursday.

The Santa Fe Sheriff's Office informed Sky News that they do not suspect foul play in the couple's deaths; however, the precise cause of death has yet to be established. The report indicated that the couple passed away alongside their dog. Authorities have not disclosed any cause of death at this point. According to Reuters, local police were not available for immediate comment.

Gene Hackman had been out of the acting profession for twenty years and resided in New Mexico with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, aged 63, who is a classical pianist.

Gene Hackman's legendary career

Gene Hackman was a formidable character actor who garnered Academy Awards for his roles in the gritty 1971 drug drama The French Connection and the 1992 western Unforgiven. He was one of the few Hollywood stars to receive critical recognition in independent cinema while also featuring in major blockbusters. To many, he is also remembered for his portrayal of Lex Luthor in the original Superman films alongside Christopher Reeve.

Having served in the United States Marine Corps for four years from 1947 to 1951, Hackman embarked on a prolific career that began in the early 1960s, appearing in over 80 films, as well as on television and stage. In addition to his two Academy Awards, he received two BAFTA Awards and four Golden Globe Awards. He concluded his acting career in 2004, with Welcome to Mooseport marking his last appearance on screen.

Hackman was married twice and had three children. His first marriage to Faye Maltese spanned 30 years, from 1956 to 1986, after which he wed Arakawa in 1991.
