Nushrratt Bharuccha Reflects on Sexism in Cinema: ‘Told This Isn’t Your Place’

Actor Nushrratt Bharuccha is making her return to the horror genre with the upcoming film Chhorii 2. The original movie received acclaim from both critics and viewers, especially for its effective combination of horror elements with contemporary social issues. In anticipation of the sequel's launch, Nushrratt engages in a conversation with HT regarding the film and its connections to real-life situations.
Nushrratt on genesis of Chhorii 2
Nushrratt Bharuccha explains that while the success of the initial film significantly contributed to the development of the sequel, the creation of part 2 occurred naturally. "We are all united in our commitment to telling the story in its most authentic form, rather than approaching it from a perspective of simply wanting to make a second installment. None of us is driven by greed. When creative individuals come together for the right reasons and with genuine intentions, the result is a truly authentic film," she states.
A significant theme within the Chhorii franchise is its exploration of patriarchy and misogyny as central elements of malevolence, effectively merging horror with social critique. Nushrratt expresses that she recognizes real-life parallels to the sexism depicted in the film, stating, "I cannot even address the major issues because they are present and emphasized. What troubles me more are the issues we have come to accept as normal. We have normalized the behavior of making derogatory remarks to women or treating girls inappropriately. It has become acceptable to tell a girl, 'you won't understand' or 'your opinion is irrelevant.' It's not just the few who make these statements, but many agree with them. For me, it is the everyday challenges and the casual sexism that are particularly distressing."
Nushrratt on battling casual sexism
The actress expresses that the normalization of casual sexism has compelled her to accept it as a part of her reality. "I have no option but to endure it. This represents a new form of oppression. While there are protests and movements aimed at challenging outdated practices, I find myself unable to voice my concerns about these issues," Nushrratt states. She further notes that in many professional environments, she has learned to refrain from confrontation. "When I am told 'you can't ask this question,' 'we don't have an answer to that,' or 'this is not your place,' I often feel that, due to the nature of my work, I must remain silent. It’s not about being difficult or creating problems. I have to act as if I am comfortable with this situation to coexist in your environment. It is a challenge," she elaborates.
