Not Too Famous to Follow Up: Neil Nitin Mukesh on Seeking Roles

11 days ago | 5 Views

Neil Nitin Mukesh, known for his roles in acclaimed Bollywood films such as New York, Johnny Gaddaar, 7 Khoon Maaf, and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, disclosed in an interview with Hindi Rush that he continues to face challenges in securing work and frequently reaches out to casting directors in pursuit of promising opportunities.

Neil elaborated on the competitive nature of the industry, noting that every actor is in search of favorable roles. He acknowledged the commercial aspect of filmmaking but stressed that his inability to assure financial success does not undermine his capability to create a successful film. He emphasized that securing the right role, along with the support of the appropriate individuals, can make a significant difference.

Neil says he still messages people for work

Despite having two decades of experience in the industry, Neil mentioned that he must continually initiate the search for new opportunities after each project. "I still reach out to people for work. They respond promptly, saying, ‘Yes, Neil, we’ll keep you in mind and will inform you if something arises.’ It is my responsibility to remind them of my presence. When I started, only a few newcomers would be introduced every few years. Now, however, a new talent emerges almost every week, which reduces one to merely an option," he remarked.

When questioned about why he has not sought assistance from his cousin, renowned casting director Shanoo Sharma, Neil expressed his admiration for her accomplishments and their close relationship. He clarified that he could not request favors from her, recognizing the challenges of building a personal brand in the casting industry. He commended her success at Yash Raj Films (YRF), which he regards as his professional home, and stated that if YRF deemed him suitable for a role, they would contact him directly.

Neil says he has made struggle his friend

In reflecting on his career, Neil noted that despite having participated in 30 films and collaborating with some of the nation's most esteemed directors, the challenges persist. "This is a business. One must maintain visibility, yet not be overly prominent. Perhaps my complexion does not align with the types of films currently being produced. Casting directors may perceive me as unsuitable for rural roles because many believe I resemble a Hollywood star. Nevertheless, I identify as desi at heart and feel capable of performing those roles. Thus, it is disheartening when such comments are made, but I have come to terms with my struggles," he remarked.

He also reminisced about the early days of his career when his debut film encountered financial difficulties. Many advised him to abandon the project, suggesting it would never see the light of day. However, Neil maintained his faith in the film, attributing his current success to it.
