Niren Bhatt Slams Bollywood's Remake Trend: ‘Majority of Post-Pandemic Remakes Have Failed’
1 month ago | 5 Views
Screenwriter Niren Bhatt, known for his contributions to major recent hits such as Stree 2, Munjya, and Bhediya, expressed his candid views regarding the prevailing remake culture in Bollywood. During his address at the Indian Screenwriters Conference (ISC), Niren characterized the current system as 'broken' and emphasized that writers must take on the role of 'disruptors' in order to thrive in the industry.
‘All writers are struggling’
Niren Bhatt serves as the chief writing architect for the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe. During the 7th edition of the Indian Screenwriters Conference (ISC), organized by the Screenwriters Association of India (SWA) on Friday, he expressed that the Hindi film industry's writing community is currently facing a significant crisis.
He remarked, “There are two perspectives—one is quite grim; all writers are facing challenges, and this is arguably the most difficult period for writers in the industry. However, it is ultimately up to you to find your way through it. I believe this is also a prime opportunity because all established norms have been upended. The entire framework is in disarray. Thus, only those who embrace disruption will thrive, and writers are the foremost disruptors. Those who remain rigid in their approach find that their films are not succeeding. This is indeed the optimal time for innovation.”
‘Out of 25 remakes post-pandemic, 23 are flops’
During the session titled The Mainstream Reality, Niren Bhatt was accompanied by Abbas Tyrewala, the dialogue writer for Pathaan, Kanika Dhillon, and Aakash Kaushik, the writer of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. The discussion was moderated by Hitesh Kewalya, known for his work on Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan.
In this forum, Bhatt emphasized the significance of original storytelling and criticized Bollywood's prevailing trend of remakes. He noted, "Out of 25 remakes post-pandemic, 23 are flops. The only way to succeed is to make original content."
Bhatt is collaborating with the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe on projects such as Thama, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, as well as Stree 3 and Bhediya 2 with Varun Dhawan. He asserted that when a writer discovers their "voice," they can provide a franchise with a naturally extended lifespan.
In the coming days, Kiran Rao, Shoojit Sarkar, Nikkhil Advani, Dibakar Banerjee, Biswapati Sarkar, and Anand Tiwari are scheduled to participate in the ISC to offer their perspectives on the industry.
