The Oscars will finally introduce a category dedicated to stunt work. The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their decision to establish this new category, which will recognize the contributions of stunt performers, in a statement released on Thursday. Named Achievement in Stunt Design, this award will debut at the 100th Academy Awards, honoring films released in 2027.

Netizens urge the Academy Awards to give Jackie Chan an honorary Oscar for his stunts

Social media users are calling on the Academy Awards to present Jackie Chan with an honorary Oscar for his remarkable stunt work. “Since the inception of cinema, stunt design has played a crucial role in filmmaking,” stated Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang in the official announcement on the Academy's website. “We take pride in recognizing the innovative efforts of these skilled and creative artists, and we commend them for their dedication and commitment to achieving this significant milestone.”

Nonetheless, the introduction of this long-anticipated category has sparked widespread calls for Jackie Chan to receive a “lifetime achievement award” in recognition of his extensive career. With over sixty years in the film industry, the 71-year-old actor has starred in more than 150 films and is renowned for performing his own stunts, particularly in the Police Story series.

In the 1980s, Chan sustained a skull fracture and experienced hearing loss while executing a perilous stunt during the filming of Lung hing foo dai (Armour of God). His extensive list of injuries and on-set mishaps includes a fall from a clock tower in the 1983 film Project A and a slide down a pole adorned with lights in the 1985 film Police Story. These stunts resulted in broken bones and burns.

The Academy's announcement of a best stunts category following Chan's retirement from action films has elicited varied responses from online users. While some believe the award is overdue, others have criticized the organization for not establishing the category earlier. Fans of the Hollywood icon have called on the Oscars to bestow the inaugural stunts award upon the star of Karate Kid.

One fan expressed on X, "Shouldn't we award Jackie Chan a lifetime achievement Academy Award for Best Stunt Design? This is unbelievable," while sharing a video of a perilous stunt executed by Chan. Another user commented, "Just think about how many Oscars Jackie Chan could have won if this category had existed in the past."

Another fan expressed outrage, stating, “It is outrageous to do this now that Jackie Chan is no longer in his prime.” Another commenter added, “Jackie Chan has been overlooked for 50 Oscars or more!” A different fan suggested, “The ceremony should begin by awarding Jackie Chan and Tom Cruise 25 Oscars each to compensate for the times they were not recognized.”
