Netizens Accuse Mukesh Khanna of Lifting Shaktimaan Costume from 90s WWE Star, Jokes Flood Social Media

Shaktimaan continues to be one of the most legendary programs in Indian television history. The superhero series from the 90s enthralled viewers unlike anything prior and even dominated the TRPs for several years. The character evolved into a symbol, and his outfit also became a fixture at fairs and Comic Cons across the nation. However, that legendary outfit might have been a copy, or at least that's what the internet claims.
Is the Shaktimaan costume a scam?
A Twitter user has recently found footage of an old wrestling match from 1995 featuring a wrestler in a costume reminiscent of the one Shaktimaan would don two years later. The match - a segment of WWF's (now WWE) Monday Night Raw - aired in December 1995 and showcased Aja Kong overcoming Chaparita Asari. Asari introduced a new costume during the match, which consisted of a red overall suit accompanied by golden armbands and shoulder pads, complete with a gold emblem at the center. The emblem resembled either a flower with multiple leaves or a sun with its rays extending outward.
The outfit appears extremely alike to the one that Mukesh Khanna donned as Shaktimaan two years afterward. The user - @thecaoticdjay - posted a picture of Asari next to Mukesh Khanna in costume and commented, “Lesser known fact: Mukesh Khanna ne #Shaktimaan ka costume 1995 WWF women’s wrestler Chaparita Asari se churaya tha (Mukesh Khanna stole the Shaktimaan costume from 1995 WWF women's wrestler Chaparita Asari). ”
The tweet was also posted on Instagram, where many users noted the resemblance between the two outfits. "So much for originality," one wrote. Another said, "This is 100% copied. " Joking about the viral 'sorry Shaktimaan' meme linked to the show, an Instagram user remarked, "Ab khud ko sorry Shaktimaan bolna padega (Now he'll have to apologise to himself). "
Everything you need to know about Shaktimaan
Created by Mukesh Khanna and directed by Dinker Jani, Shaktimaan featured Khanna in the lead role, alongside Vaishnavi Mahant, Kitu Gidwani, Surendra Pal, Lalit Parimoo, and Tom Alter. The series was broadcast on Doordarshan from November 1997 to March 2005. It generated merchandise as well as a spinoff comic book series. An animated series was aired on Sonic from 2011-12, while an animated film debuted in 2013.
In 2022, a live-action reboot of the franchise was revealed with a trilogy of films that was to be produced by Sony. Ranveer Singh was rumored to be cast as Shaktimaan. However, according to reports, the film is now stalled.
