Netflix Chief Backs Meghan Markle: Says Her Influence Is ‘Underestimated’

Meghan Markle launched her new Netflix series, With Love, earlier this month. The program showcases candid discussions and personal insights, encouraging creativity in both cooking and gardening while celebrating the charm of Southern California. Despite its intentions, the series has garnered mixed feedback from audiences, including criticism from Meghan's father. In a conversation with Variety, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos expressed his support for Meghan, asserting that she is "underestimated in terms of her influence on culture."

What Ted said about Meghan Markle

During the interview, when asked about the collaboration with Meghan's company for e-commerce initiatives linked to the new show, Ted remarked, "I believe Meghan is underestimated regarding her cultural impact. When we released the trailer for the 'Harry & Meghan' documentary series in 2022, the media scrutinized every detail for days. The shoes she wore sold out globally, and the Hermès blanket positioned behind her was also in high demand worldwide. There is a significant fascination with Meghan Markle. She and Harry are often overlooked."

‘It’s good for marketing’

He further elaborated on the streaming service's marketing strategies, stating, "This is beneficial for marketing and branding. These are all expressions of fandom. While I don't envision us creating theme parks, I do see numerous ways to engage with consumers like this. I appreciate the Topgolf model over the Disneyland model, as it allows for more frequent visits throughout the year, encouraging people to return and explore. We aim to be more integrated into our fans' lives rather than just a visit to Disneyland every few years. And I have no criticism of Disneyland."

This collaboration with Netflix is not Meghan's first venture. In 2022, the platform also promoted Harry & Meghan, a documentary series detailing their relationship, their experiences as senior members of the British royal family, and their decision to step back from royal duties.

In Meghan's latest series, each episode showcases her as she gets ready to host a variety of guests, both familiar and new, in settings such as the kitchen, garden, and beehive. Among the notable guests are Alice Waters, Roy Choi, and Mindy Kaling.
