Actor Neha Sargam's depiction of Saloni Bhabhi in the Mirzapur series propelled her to instant stardom, garnering widespread attention from audiences. While she appreciates the affection and admiration directed towards her character, she reflects on the tendency of people to overlook her 13-year tenure in the entertainment industry.

In a recent interview, Neha candidly discussed her life following the release of Mirzapur 3 and her current involvement in theatre.

On life after Mirzapur 3

Regarding her experiences after Mirzapur 3, the third season of the series, which debuted last year, may have signified the end of Neha Sargam's character, yet it also solidified her reputation as a rising star. Despite sharing the screen with prominent actors such as Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyendu Sharma, Vijay Varma, and Shweta Tripathi, Neha made a lasting impression on the audience.

“Yes, I was also part of Mirzapur 2, and I believe my character began to attract attention from that season. However, Mirzapur 3 brought a new level of surprises and recognition,” she shared.

Neha further remarked, “Nevertheless, people frequently forget that I have been in this industry for 13 years. Many viewers of Mirzapur may have encountered my previous work and thought, 'This girl looks familiar.' I do not wish to diminish that aspect of my journey; I have dedicated myself to every role I have undertaken. Mirzapur 3 felt like a well-deserved acknowledgment of my years of hard work, as now, even in discussions about Mirzapur and beyond, people recognize me for my earlier contributions.”

Did the fanbase influence her decision-making regarding future projects or roles?

"First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation for all the love, attention, and support I have received. However, I am also aware that such sentiments are transient—' today, someone is in the spotlight; tomorrow, it could be another.' My method of selecting work has consistently remained unchanged, irrespective of the fanbase. If a project does not resonate with me, makes me uneasy, or if my instincts do not align with it, I choose not to pursue it. This is the sole criterion I adhere to. I have always been discerning in my choices, and that is how I approach my professional endeavors," states the actor, known for her roles in shows such as Chand Chupa Badal Mein, Ramayan, and Doli Armano Ki.

On her life on stage

Regarding her theatrical pursuits, Neha is deeply passionate about the stage and actively engages in a career as a theatre artist. She believes that this dual focus has significantly contributed to her development as an actor.

"I have struggled with stage fright since childhood, experiencing it quite intensely. As I grew up, I did not recognize it as an issue; I simply avoided performing on stage without questioning my reluctance. However, there was a pivotal moment when my principal insisted that I take part in a competition I had signed up for, leaving me with no alternative. I performed out of obligation rather than personal inclination," shares Neha, who recently took the stage in Delhi as part of the final season of Mughal-e-Azam: The Musical.

She elaborates, “It was during the production of ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ that I genuinely recognized my fear of performing on stage. I hesitated to discuss it with the team, uncertain of their reactions. However, throughout the journey of ‘Mughal-e-Azam,’ I managed to conquer that fear. Even now, I experience a degree of nervousness, but it has evolved into a positive force that energizes my performance. The theatre has instilled confidence in me and heightened my awareness of my body and its movements during performances. In acting, it is essential for every part of you, from head to toe, to embody the character, and theatre has significantly aided me in achieving that.”

Neha expresses that being on stage has enhanced her ability “to be aware and fully present.” “Mistakes occur during performances, but one must release them immediately, as everything transpires in a matter of seconds. Your responses need to be swift, almost instinctual. I consider this to be my most significant lesson,” she confesses.

She proudly shares, “I have even had audience members who have consistently followed my work over the years. There is one individual who travels to every city just to see ‘Mughal-e-Azam’—from Delhi to Mumbai and even to Dubai. It is incredibly humbling and heartwarming to receive such steadfast support.”

On comparing theatre with TV

For Neha Sargam, the world of theatre stands apart, incomparable to the realms of television or film.

"Performing on stage alters the dimensions; you are visible from all angles. In contrast to film or television, where the camera dictates your framing, stage performance requires direct engagement with the audience. Nonetheless, there exists an invisible barrier, whether it be the camera in front of you or an imaginary wall on stage,” she explains, further noting, “Another significant distinction in theatre is the shift in awareness that accompanies the medium. While the core principles of acting remain constant, variations in volume, intensity, and delivery are dictated by the demands of the scene rather than the medium itself.”

On her next project

Regarding her upcoming project, Neha is currently immersed in the theatre production Mughal-e-Azam The Musical, directed by Feroz Abbas Khan. This year, the musical has toured cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, produced by Deepesh Salgia under the auspices of Shapoorji Pallonji.

"I am presently concentrating on the here and now. I was particularly thrilled about the 'Mughal-e-Azam' season in Delhi, as we returned after a significant hiatus. Our previous performances in Delhi have been remarkable, and this experience was equally exhilarating,” Neha shares, portraying the character of Anarkali in the production.
