2 months ago | 5 Views
Actor Neetu Chandra has launched a campaign against rapper and singer Yo Yo Honey Singh regarding his latest song, "Maniac," alleging that it objectifies women. She has submitted a public interest litigation (PIL) to the Patna High Court seeking a prohibition on what she describes as "vulgar songs."
What we know about the case
Neetu has submitted a public interest litigation (PIL) to the Patna High Court, alleging that Honey Singh's latest song, "Maniac," contains vulgar content and objectifies women. The PIL also names other contributors to the song, including lyricist Leo Grewal and Bhojpuri artists Ragini Vishwakarma and Arjun Ajanabi. A hearing for the case is anticipated later this month.
The PIL states, "Women should never err in viewing anyone as an object, as disrespecting a woman has consistently led to severe repercussions."
What is Neetu Chandra saying
Neetu, known for her involvement in projects like Garam Masala and Traffic Signal, has requested that Honey Singh revise the lyrics of his song. In her public interest litigation (PIL), she contends that the song exhibits "overt sexualisation," portraying "women as mere sex objects." Furthermore, she asserts that the song utilizes "Bhojpuri language to normalize vulgarity" and undermines "women's empowerment."
In a discussion with India TV, Neetu expressed, "Vulgar Bhojpuri and Hindi songs are hindering the education of girls and women in Bihar, compelling them to walk with their heads down. These songs discourage women from even watching television at home. Numerous singers who perform such songs have achieved fame, which could impede societal and national progress."
She further stated, "If girls and women cannot walk safely in public, how can they contemplate development? If a government can enact a law to prohibit alcohol in order to protect women from intoxicated husbands, why can it not impose a ban on these vulgar songs for school and college-going girls and women? I advocate for a complete prohibition on the production and dissemination of these songs in Bihar."
Honey Singh's song Maniac, produced in collaboration with T-Series, features Esha Gupta in the video. Released on February 22, it has garnered over 7 crore views on YouTube.
