Neeraj Pandey, the talented director known for the hit series Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, is back with a highly anticipated new season titled Khakee: The Bengal Chapter. At the trailer launch, he expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season and shared why he chose Kolkata as the backdrop. His love for the city and its rich history, which he has explored in his earlier films, is evident.
Pandey opened up about his personal connection to Kolkata, saying, "I've been looking for a reason to return to this city in some way since my second film... whether it was Special 26 or Dhoni... and now we have this 7-episode series set in Kolkata." He emphasized that his strong ties to the city made it a natural choice for Khakee: The Bengal Chapter.
"After the huge success of the Bihar Chapter, it was a no-brainer to come back for season two. It felt right to set it in a place I know well, and Kolkata was the clear pick," he added. Pandey also shared his excitement about reuniting the amazing cast and crew for this new season, saying, "The chance to bring this incredible cast and crew together was really appealing. I'm proud of what we've accomplished, and it's a significant moment for all of us."
Reflecting on the casting and development process, Pandey talked about the early days of creating the Bengal chapter: "Once we decided to set the second season of Khakee in Bengal, our first task was to find the right writer and director. I had known Debattama for a long time and enjoyed our discussions. He was the first to join us, and he began crafting the story. We did our research, and the scripting took about 6 to 8 months," he shared.
Pandey highlighted how the team collaborated closely on the script before settling on the cast. "While we were in the middle of writing, we began talking about potential cast members. What we have now is really special to us, and we’re super excited about how it turned out," he shared.
In a thoughtful take on the show's global resonance, Pandey pointed out the significance of sharing human, universal narratives: "You don’t set out thinking, ‘I’m going to wow the world,’ but rather focus on crafting the story. If it resonates locally, it will find its way. That’s our goal with all our stories – they need to be human and universal, and then the world will connect."
Looking back at the success of the Bihar Chapter, Pandey noted that the team realized they had to elevate their game for the second season. "After seeing the response to the Bihar Chapter, we understood we had to step it up. We needed to at least meet the storytelling standards we set. We knew the Bengal chapter would come with high expectations."
The series stars Jeet Madnani, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Saswata Chatterjee, and Parambrata Chatterjee, directed by Debatma Mandal and Tushar Kanti Ray. Showrunner Neeraj Pandey co-wrote the script with Debatma Mandal and Samrat Chakraborty. Khakee: The Bengal Chapter is set to premiere on March 20 on Netflix.
