Nayanthara shares her reasons for penning that bold open letter to Dhanush: ‘I only need to worry when I’m making things up.’

Nayanthara decided to keep quiet after sending a sharp open letter to her ex-co-star and producer Dhanush regarding his lawsuit about the unauthorized use of a clip from his 2015 film, Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, in her new Netflix India documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale. Recently, she opened up about her decision in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India.

This isn't just for show.

Courage comes from being honest. I only feel fear when I’m making things up. If I’m being truthful, there’s nothing to be afraid of. If I hadn’t spoken up now, when things have already escalated, I doubt anyone would find the strength to stand up for themselves again, Nayanthara shared. “Why should I be afraid of doing what I believe is right? I should only feel fear if I’m in the wrong. I’m not the type to damage someone’s reputation just for attention,” she continued.

Nayanthara clarified that her open letter wasn’t meant to promote her documentary. She emphasized that Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale “isn’t about the film’s success or failure,” but about getting to know someone better if you appreciate them. She mentioned that she only wanted four lines from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan that captured “our life, our love, our kids.” The 2015 movie was directed by her now-husband Vignesh Shivan and produced by Dhanush's Wunderbar Films.

Nayanthara tried to talk to Dhanush.

Nayanthara shared that, even though she usually wouldn’t do it, she reached out to Dhanush's manager to see if she could have a chat with him. She mentioned that she didn’t want to dive into the past decade's issues but just wanted to clear the air so they could at least exchange a friendly ‘hi’ if they happened to run into each other later on. It’s worth noting that they completely ignored each other at a wedding shortly after Nayanthara's open letter came out.

She also pointed out that the footage used in the documentary was just a quick behind-the-scenes clip taken by a crew member. Nayanthara explained that back then, behind-the-scenes footage wasn’t included in the contract like it is now, so it shouldn’t count as official footage. She hoped Dhanush, being such a well-respected actor, would let things slide, but instead, he made a big deal out of it after the trailer dropped. That felt “unfair” to her, prompting her to write that sharp open letter.
