Nawazuddin Siddiqui Highlights Industry Prejudice: “Would Producers Back a Big-Budget Film with Irrfan Khan as Lead?”

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has expressed his views on whether he believes it is a shortcoming of the entertainment industry for not having faith in actors "who don’t conform to its stereotype of how a hero should appear. " In a conversation with Mid-Day, Nawazuddin brought up the late Irrfan Khan, Manoj Bajpayee, Naseeruddin Shah, and Om Puri, questioning if anyone has ever created a ₹20-30 crore film featuring them.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui discusses how actors stand out from one another

Nawazuddin stated, "no one has ever produced a significant film with" these actors. “We are witnessing the outcomes of films being released today featuring new actors. The issue is, whether it was Irrfan Khan bhai, or Manoj [Bajpayee], Naseeruddin [Shah] saab or Om Puri saab, has anyone actually created a film with them that costs ₹20-30 crore? Today, you shower them with compliments and regard them as exceptional actors, but nobody has made a large film with them. This occurs only here,” he mentioned.

When discussing the entertainment industry beyond India, he remarked that casting relies on talent rather than appearance. “Globally, they do not distinguish between actors. They simply engage a talented actor. Here, we have classifications such as actor, hero, star, superstar. We possess such remarkable actors among us; you will find them in movies or series playing minor roles. They aren’t just supporting actors. They are extraordinary talents. Yet, no one has considered creating a film with them. And perhaps no one ever will. We will eventually be gone, but this will continue,” he concluded.

Nawazuddin's upcoming projects

Nawazuddin is recognized for his roles in films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Badlapur, Kick, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and the web series Sacred Games, among various others. He will soon appear in Costao. The narrative, inspired by Costao Fernandes’ life, takes place in the 1990s in Goa and focuses on Nawazuddin's Costao, who confronted gold smugglers and corruption in spite of personal challenges. It is scheduled to debut on ZEE5 on May 1. Directed by newcomer Sejal Shah, the film also features Priya Bapat, Kishore Kumar G, Gagan Dev Riar, and Hussain Dalal.
