Christopher Nolan's Inception is a landmark film that will always hold a significant place in popular culture. Recently, Nag Ashwin, the director of Kalki 2898 AD, disclosed in an interview that he had conceived a concept akin to Inception and felt disheartened for a week after viewing the film's trailer. His remarks sparked amusement online, leading to a flurry of jokes directed at the director.
What did Nag Ashwin say?
During a session organized by Gulte, Nag was questioned about the challenges of generating original ideas in today's digital age. He responded, “Many of us create something, and a few months later, we encounter a trailer featuring a similar idea or concept. It can be disheartening.”
He referenced Inception, stating, “I had a concept back in 2007 or 2008 that was not identical but somewhat similar to Inception. My focus was on memories, while the film dealt with dreams. After I saw the trailer, I felt down for a week. Originality is beyond our control, and pursuing it is futile. What matters is being authentic rather than merely original.”
Internet reacts to Nag Ashwin’s statement
Many individuals were skeptical of Nag’s assertion that he was significantly impacted by the Inception trailer due to his similar idea. One user on X (formerly Twitter) remarked, “Just like Govinda was supposed to star in Avatar? Sure.” Another pointed out, “Have you heard of Paprika, which was released in 2006 and is based on a 1993 novel of the same name? Inception was inspired by this film, which came out in 2010. So, Nag Ashwin likely watched this anime movie and got his idea in 2008 but couldn't execute it.”
A Reddit user humorously commented, “I read about Govinda vs. Cameroon, but this takes it to another level. He has outdone Varun Dhawan by claiming Dilwale is better than Inception.” Another inquired, “Will Prabhas take on the role of DiCaprio?” Some even created memes depicting Nag's reaction after watching the Inception trailer. One user on X wrote, “Wow, did his thoughts transition from Inception to Kalki?”
Nag Ashwin’s filmography
Nag made his directorial debut in 2015 with the coming-of-age film Yevade Subramanyam, featuring Nani, Vijay Deverakonda, and Malvika Nair. The movie achieved considerable success, leading to his next project, the biopic Mahanati, released in 2018 and starring Keerthy Suresh, which became a significant hit. In 2024, he released the sci-fi film Kalki 2898 AD, which included a star-studded cast of Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan. This film grossed over ₹1000 crore, ranking it among the highest-grossing films in Indian cinema.
