1 month ago | 5 Views
The young cast of the forthcoming film Nilavuku Enmel Ennadi Kobam (NEEK) has characterized their roles using distinct descriptors: Extravagant (Venkatesh Menon), Kinder and empathetic (Ramya Ranganathan), Sophisticated (Anikha Surendran), and Will power (Pavish). This film marks the third directorial venture of actor Dhanush. Additionally, Rabiya Khatoon remarks, “I cannot disclose a specific trait of her character, as it would reveal too much. However, I can indicate that I would not want to bring that aspect of her personality home,” providing a subtle clue regarding her role.

Among the ensemble cast, with the exception of Anikha, who began her career as a child artist, all members faced the camera for the first time in NEEK. While Pavish and Venkatesh have prior experience as assistant directors, Venkatesh remarks, “I believe that over time, one becomes more relaxed. Initially, it was somewhat challenging, but as the days progressed, it became easier.” For Pavish, who hails from a family of actors and filmmakers and has spent four years assisting Dhanush, states that he did not experience camera shyness. “I was not apprehensive in front of the camera, but I felt nervous about the individual behind it. Dhanush sir ultimately made me feel at ease and welcomed.”
In contrast, Ramya, who has a background in dance, shares a different perspective: “I am accustomed to performing on stage, which likely aided me somewhat. Nevertheless, it was still a challenge. As Venky mentioned, over time, I gained courage and confidence, although I believe I still harbour some apprehension.”
Describing acting as a demanding endeavour, Rabiya expresses, “Many people assume it is simple, and I once held that belief as well. I used to critique performances, but when portraying certain characters and not executing them well, numerous thoughts race through my mind. Your director may envision it differently, and you may interpret your role in another way. Finding common ground is when the process begins to ease. It is also essential to feel comfortable in front of the camera; I believe that leads to improvement. Additionally, we all aspired to perform well, especially since we were acting in front of Dhanush sir.”
Conversely, for Anikha, facing the camera is not a new experience. However, NEEK represents her debut as a lead actor in Tamil cinema. She expresses that it is indeed significant to make her lead debut in a film directed by Dhanush. “It’s not that I intended to take a break, but I was seeking compelling characters and a strong team, and NEEK arrived at the perfect moment,” she concludes.
‘Dhanush sir was a very patient director’
The young ensemble of NEEK has greatly benefited from having Dhanush not only as a leading actor but also as the director. Pavish remarks, “Dhanush sir exhibited remarkable patience and possesses a deep understanding of the challenges faced by actors during their inaugural film. There were moments when we took our time to perfect our scenes, and his experience as an actor allowed him to provide us with the necessary space.”
Ramya adds that Dhanush comprehended the struggles inherent in acting. “As debutants, we often lack clarity on how much is sufficient for our initial scenes. It was crucial for him to demonstrate and illustrate the performances, enabling us to capture and replicate his approach. If we manage to achieve even 10% of what he accomplished, we will have done our roles justice.”
Anikha and Rabiya also express how Dhanush's demonstrations were invaluable during the filming of NEEK, emphasizing their desire to emulate even a fraction of his performance. Pavish notes, “There were instances when I found myself so engrossed in his acting that I forgot to analyze it. Eventually, I started recording videos to use as reference material for my own preparation.”
The cast of NEEK represents a new wave of talent entering the industry at a time when Tamil cinema is experiencing a shortage of fresh artists. “It is encouraging to see new talents emerging, and we feel fortunate to be part of this moment. Witnessing so many debuts this year is truly inspiring and will undoubtedly benefit both us and the industry.”

Concluding the discussion, Venkatesh expresses that his primary interest lies in scripts that resonate with audiences. He mentions, “If given the chance, I would be eager to participate in a film like Premalu.” In contrast, Ramya aspires to undertake roles that carry significance and depth within a film. Rabiya remains open-minded, seeking compelling narratives and opportunities for exploration. Anikha indicates that she is not exclusively focused on female lead roles, but is attentive to diverse projects and scripts.
Pavish remarks, “Dhanush sir often refers to the concept of subtlety. I have come to realize that subtle acting can connect with many people, as seen in films like Thiruchitrambalam, VIP, and Yaaradi Nee Mohini. Since sir shared this insight, I have observed that people often display understated reactions, even in surprising situations. Subtlety has become more prevalent in contemporary performances, and he has imparted this valuable lesson to us.”
NEEK is scheduled to premiere in theatres on February 21.
