Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi's upcoming film, Ramayana, is generating significant excitement among audiences. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the project has attracted considerable attention since news of its production circulated on social media platforms. In this adaptation, Ranbir and Sai will portray the iconic characters of Lord Ram and Sita, respectively. In a recent interview, Mukesh Khanna shared his thoughts on the growing trend of mythology-inspired films in the industry, particularly in light of discussions surrounding Ranbir's role as Ram in Tiwari's direction.
Mukesh Khanna on Ranbir Kapoor playing Lord Ram
In a recent interview with the Times of India, Mukesh Khanna emphasized the importance of treating mythological representations with sensitivity. He asserted that figures such as Ram and Krishna should be portrayed as divine and aesthetically pleasing, rather than adhering to conventional standards of attractiveness.
"For example, it would be inappropriate to depict Ram or Krishna with a moustache. These characters embody a sacred essence—Krishna, in particular, is frequently illustrated as elegantly beautiful. Modifying his appearance by adding a beard or changing his traditional features would fundamentally misrepresent his identity," he elaborated.
Mukesh Khanna comments on Ranveer Singh
He drew a parallel by emphasizing the casting of Ranveer Singh, whom he described as an exceptional actor. Nevertheless, he remarked that Ranveer's vibrant persona does not correspond with the sanctity needed for roles such as Shaktimaan or Ram.
"The selected actor must truly reflect the spirit of these legendary figures. Casting an actor more appropriate for Ravan in the role of Ram would be a disservice to the character of Ram," Khanna stated.
Ranbir Kapoor talks about Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana
At the 2024 Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Ranbir shared his insights regarding Nitesh Tiwari's adaptation of the Ramayana for the first time. He commended the film's producer, Namit Malhotra, highlighting that Malhotra has assembled an exceptional team of artists and creative talents for the project.
Ranbir elaborated further, stating, “The project consists of two segments. I have completed the filming of Part 1 and will soon begin work on Part 2. It is a privilege for me to portray the character of Ram in this narrative. This opportunity is truly a dream come true. The film encompasses a wide array of themes, illustrating the essence of Indian culture, particularly in relation to family and marital relationships.”
In the meantime, Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana Part 1 is scheduled for release in theatres on Diwali 2026, with the second instalment set to premiere on Diwali 2027. In addition to Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita, the cast is expected to include Yash as Ravana and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman.
