Mohanlal’s Vrushabha not shelved; director Nandakishore shares concept post

In August 2022, Kannada filmmaker Nandakishore had announced his first pan-India project, Vrushabha, starring none other than Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in the lead. A fantasy action drama based on a father-son relationship dynamic, featuring Roshan Meka along with Mohanlal, the film apparently went on floors in Mysuru a year later, but since then, there’s been radio silence from the team and the buzz was that it had been shelved after the first schedule.

Mohanlal’s Vrushabha: Shooting for the Nandakishore directorial starts in Mysuru

A little while ago, Nandakishore posted a concept poster of the film, suggesting that Vrushabha is still very much in the works. The filmmaker had also responded to a Mohanlal fan’s query about Vrushabha’s status and quashed rumours that it was shelved. Nandakishore said that the shoot was delayed for technical reasons and that the team is now set to resume in August. And that’s not all, Nanda is even contemplating a Sankranti 2025 release for the film.

Nandakishore's confirmation comes only a day after he returned to social media after a long break with a post that read, "Every setback is a setup for your comeback". (See below)

Talking to OTTplay, Nandakishore confirmed the same, adding that 50% of the film has already been shot. Even with extensive VFX work, which is the more time-consuming bit of the post-production, the filmmaker says that Vrushabha should be complete soon enough and that promotional activities will begin by November or December.

Is there a change in the team, we ask, given that he has put up a concept poster and Nandakishore states that Connekt Media and Ekta Kapoor remain producers of the project, which is being simultaneously shot in Malayalam and Telugu and will be dubbed in several other languages eventually. The film also stars Shanaya Kapoor, Ramya Krishna, Simran, Ravi Shankar, Sarathkumar and KGF fame Garuda Ram, among others.

Nandakishore’s last film in Kannada was Ranna starring Shreyas K Manju, which did not work at the box office. The filmmaker was set to reunite with Dhruva Sarja to recreate their Pogaru magic with a film called Dubaari that would have paired the actor with Sreeleela. But for reasons best known to the team, this film did not take off, with Dhruva instead doing Martin with AP Arjun with the same producer, Uday K Mehta.
