A controversy arose following reports that Mohanlal had prayed at Sabarimala earlier this month for the health of his friend Mammootty. Critics expressed their discontent over the ritual conducted in Mammootty's name, highlighting that he is a Muslim and arguing that it contradicts 'Islamic principles.' According to a report by TOI, this incident has ignited debate within the Muslim community.

Mohanlal, Mammootty draw ire for Sabarimala puja

A columnist and former editor of Jamaathe Islami’s publication, Madhyamam Daily, has expressed concerns regarding a religious offering on social media. In a video, he remarked that if Mohanlal made the offering with Mammootty's consent, then Mammootty should issue an apology to the Muslim community.

The publication provided a translation of his comments in Malayalam: “If Mohanlal acted on his own beliefs, there would be no issue to discuss. However, if Mammootty was involved directly or if his associates were responsible, such actions would be contrary to Islamic teachings.” Following a wave of criticism, he reportedly removed his post.

Nasar Faizy Koodathayi, a notable member of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, a significant organization of Sunni scholars in Kerala, echoed similar sentiments. He indicated that the offering would be inappropriate if it was made with Mammootty's approval.

“There is no problem with Mohanlal, a Hindu devotee, praying for Mammootty according to his religious customs. This issue should not be a topic of debate. However, if the ritual was conducted with Mammootty's awareness or consent, it would be deemed inappropriate,” he reportedly stated.

Koodathayi further clarified in a subsequent statement, “It is not only permissible but also a duty for a Muslim to pray to Allah for the recovery of a non-Muslim friend. If a non-Muslim prays for their Muslim friend's recovery in accordance with their own faith, and it is not considered wrong within that faith, then a Muslim has no grounds to intervene.”

Mohanlal offers prayers for Mammootty at Sabarimala

On March 18, Mohanlal visited Sabarimala. During the Usha Puja, he provided the priest with a note that included Mammootty’s birth name, Muhammed Kutty, and his birth star, Vishakham. A receipt from the Devaswom office related to this note subsequently surfaced online.

When questioned about the incident at a Chennai event for his forthcoming film L2 Empuraan, Mohanlal suggested that the leak might have originated from an official associated with the Travancore Devaswom Board, which oversees the Lord Ayyapa shrine. However, the board refuted this claim to the media, stating that they were not responsible for the leak.
