Mohanlal has partnered with Prithviraj Sukumaran in all three of the latter's directorial projects. Following their successful collaborations in Prithviraj’s debut film, Lucifer, and the subsequent Bro Daddy, the duo is set to reunite for L2 Empuraan, which is scheduled for release in March 2025. Mohanlal, often referred to as The Complete Actor, expressed admiration for the young director while also noting the challenges of working with him, stating that 'It is very tough to work' with the director of Lucifer.
Mohanlal on Prithviraj
In an interview with Baradwaj Rangan prior to the release of his film Barroz, Mohanlal discussed his experiences with contemporary directors, particularly Prithviraj.
He praised the actor-director, stating, “Prithviraj is an exceptional director. He possesses a deep understanding of technical aspects such as lensing and equipment, and, crucially, he comprehends the actor's needs. He persistently seeks the desired outcome, ensuring that you deliver your best. His dedication as a director is remarkable, making collaboration quite challenging. One must fully commit oneself.”
The esteemed actor further elaborated, “There is no room for ego. He will demand what is necessary for the character, and he will achieve it. The entire vision of the film resides within him, leaving no room for error. Such is his level of commitment.”
In Prithviraj’s directorial debut, Lucifer, Mohanlal delivered a remarkable performance as Stephen Nedumpally, while in Bro Daddy, they portrayed a charming father-son relationship. Following these successful projects, they are set to collaborate once more for the second installment of the Lucifer series, L2: Empuraan, which is anticipated to premiere on March 27, 2025.
Mohanlal acknowledged that while other emerging filmmakers also exhibit commitment, their approaches differ.
When questioned about any hesitance in accepting projects from other contemporary directors, Mohanlal promptly denied such reluctance, referencing his upcoming film Thudarum. This film, featuring Shobana, is directed by Tharun Moorthy, whose debut film, Operation Java, received significant acclaim for its narrative and performances. Additionally, he will be collaborating with Jithu Madhavan, the director of Aavesham.
Mohanlal on Malaikottai Vaaliban
The renowned superstar shared insights regarding his collaboration with Lijo Jose Pellissery on the film Malaikottai Vaaliban. Despite the considerable anticipation surrounding its release, the film did not fulfill the expectations of his fans and the audience at large.
In reflecting on the film's box office performance, Mohanlal stated, “The film was very good. But it didn’t come up to the mark. If a movie fails, the entire blame will come on the actor.” He emphasized the importance of being judicious in his film selections, noting, “The entire burden will come on my shoulders.”
In contrast, Mohanlal is preparing for the premiere of his directorial debut, Barroz, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 25, 2024.
