Mohanlal Responds to Empuraan Controversy: ‘Scenes Removed to Respect Sentiments’

2 days ago | 5 Views

Following criticism from right-wing activists regarding several sequences in Mohanlal’s highly anticipated film Empuraan, the Malayalam superstar addressed the issue on his social media platform. He accepted responsibility for the film's content, informing those who felt offended that the team has collectively decided to remove the controversial scenes.

After the film's release on March 27, various right-wing activists condemned Empuraan and its creators for allegedly promoting an anti-Hindu agenda. Among the scenes that reportedly provoked backlash were depictions of the 2002 Gujarat riots, which are integral to the backstory of Prithviraj’s character, Zayed Masood, as well as the antagonist Balraj, also known as Baba Bajrangi. The latter is portrayed as a key figure behind a significant political party that exploits religion to rally its followers.

The RSS-affiliated publication Organiser also released an article asserting that Empuraan employs these historical events to propagate a divisive, anti-Hindu narrative that threatens societal harmony.

Mohanlal finally responds to Empuraan controversy

While director Prithviraj Sukumaran has chosen to remain silent regarding the allegations, writer Murali Gopy has stated that he will not respond, asserting, “Everyone has the right to interpret the film their way.”

In a recent social media post, Mohanlal clarified his position. He acknowledged that certain elements of the film have upset some viewers. “As an artist, it is my responsibility to ensure that none of my films are intended to offend any political institution, ideology, or religion,” he stated, expressing regret on behalf of the Empuraan team if they have hurt anyone's feelings. He also mentioned that, recognizing their responsibility, the team has collectively decided to remove the contentious scenes.

Prithviraj shared Mohanlal's post on his own social media account, indicating his agreement with the decision to re-edit the film and resubmit it to the censor board. Reports suggest that the revised version of L2: Empuraan will be released next week.

Mohanlal comes under fire for his ‘cowardly’ stance on Empuraan

Mohanlal faces criticism for his perceived ‘cowardly’ response to the Empuraan situation. Many supporters of the film have expressed their discontent, arguing that there was no need to yield to threats. One Facebook user commented, “Aren’t you ashamed, Mr. Mohanlal, to have read the script and released the movie only to make changes due to threats from Sangh Parivar? You are a coward.”

On Saturday, Major Ravi, a long-time associate of Mohanlal and vice president of the Kerala BJP, went live on Facebook, claiming that Mohanlal had not viewed the entire film and was unaware of its complete narrative until he attended the first screening at 6 AM on March 27. The director also noted that Mohanlal was dissatisfied with certain scenes in the film.

Did Mohanlal listen to Empuraan narration or not?

In a previous interview conducted alongside Mohanlal during the promotional activities for Empuraan, Prithviraj revealed that he provided a six-hour narration to both the renowned actor and producer Antony Perumbavoor in Dubai. Following this extensive presentation, Mohanlal expressed his enthusiasm for the project and agreed to participate in the film.
